Did you miss last week's sermon? Catch it on-line here: Becca Lockwood preaching "The Good Disciple"
6:15 pm Join us this week for a very special evening service with Bryan Sirchio @ the Well in Clark Hall
This week's scripture reading: Luke 12:13-31 The Parable of the Rich Fool
Someone in the crowd said to him, 'Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.' But he said to him, 'Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?' And he said to them, 'Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.' Then he told them a parable: 'The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, "What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?" Then he said, "I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry." But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?" So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.' Do Not Worry He said to his disciples, 'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you-you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. | |

Sharing Brings Joy. To Us. To Others. To God.
Sunday, March 17, 2013 On Sunday, March 17th, Hancock will take the Lenten offering for One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS), which is administered by the Wider Church Ministries of the United Church of Christ. This annual refugee, relief and development collection provides funds that transform lives through health, education, agricultural and emergency relief efforts in 138 countries throughout the world.
One Great Hour of Sharing funds enable the United Church of Christ to respond quickly to disasters and other urgent and unexpected needs as they arise. Some examples of your gifts to OGHA include drought and famine relief in Africa, earthquake response in Haiti, earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan, and long-term recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina.
An envelope for your gift was enclosed in last Sunday's bulletin for the offering that will be taken this coming Sunday. Envelopes will also be available in the narthex. Please give generously to this important ministry.

A Note of Thanks from MaryAnn Shupe
Dear Hancock Friends,
Thank you so much for your beautiful cards, thoughtful notes, and continued prayers. Losing two siblings to cancer at young ages has been difficult, but Paul and I feel very supported by our Hancock family. For both Rich in September and Becky this past week, Paul did a beautiful job helping my family remember and pay tribute to their lives. I am grateful to him, and comforted by my wide circle of friends.
Thank you, MaryAnn Shupe

Women of the Greatest Generation: Stories of Faith, Hope, Love, and Courage--April 10th, 1:30pm in the Pearson Room
Join us on Wednesday, April 10 at 1:30 as we discuss Women of the Greatest Generation, Stories of Faith, Hope, Love and Courage. This two volume anthology was created by Rev. Dr. Fran Bogle and Hancock's own Rev. Nancy Reed. Fran and and Nancy will share their process and they collected stories about the lives of women who lived through the Second World War. You will hear the stories of a woman who raised rats for penicillin experiments, and another who was the first woman hired as a professional chemist. Through Sakae's story we will learn what it was like to grow up in Japan during this time, and Alma will help us get a new perspective on events in Glascow, Scotland. One lady will help us remember rationing and and another will enable us to imagine what it was like to stay in touch with a new husband while he was overseas in the Pacific. At the end of our time Rosemarie Sauermann share her story about growing up in Cologne, Germany, and how oral history and the ministry of remembrance are related.
We hope this time together will enable us to celebrate the unique stories we all have to share. Fran and Nancy will give us some ideas about how to tell our stories so that we can share them with family and friends, and Rosemarie will help us understand why telling our own stories is so important. The Rev. Dr. Fran Bogle is the Protestant Chaplain at Newton Wellesley Hospital. Fran also coordinates the Just Peace Players, a liturgical drama group that writes plays on peace and justice issues. Fran is also an avid photographer, loves to travel and has a ministry dog.
The Rev.Nancy Reed is a member of Hancock United Church of Christ and next month will celebrate her 30th year of ordained ministry. Nancy is currently a member of the Pastoral Care team at Mount Auburn Hospital, a member of the Just Peace Players, and from May through October is a tour guide on the Liberty Ride telling the story of April 19, 1775. Nancy is a Board Certified Chaplain, a Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki Master and a Certified Hypnotist. |
Thursday morning Lenten Book Group: Help, Thanks, Wow
Explore the practice of prayer, ways to enrich your prayer time, and find your "prayer voice."
Led by Pam Cochrane, Seminarian and Director of Children's Ministries
Thursdays, 9:30 a.m., Wilson Room -- February 21, 28 and March 7, 14, 21
Jesus' disciples knew how important prayer was for Jesus and they wanted to plug into that energy source. They often asked for him to share his thoughts on prayer as we remember in the Gospel of Luke the question, "Lord, teach us to pray." Jesus answered with "The Lord's Prayer," one all Christians share in common, even though language and translations vary. What other prayers sustain you, ground you? Ann Lamont shares three simple prayers in her new book Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers. Come for as many sessions as you can as we explore the practice of prayer, ways to enrich your prayer time, and find your "prayer voice."

40th Annual Good Friday Walk--Participate or Support Hancock's Walkers!
The 40th annual Good Friday walk, known as the Sharing Walk, will take place on March 29th this year. Sharing was initiated as a response to a Tufts Medical School study of children in the southern states who because of poverty were suffering brain damage as a result of malnutrition .Guided by the Massachusetts woman who founded the organization, Sharing focuses on the needs of children primarily in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia who suffer from both poverty and racism. More than 94% of the money raised by the walkers, (more than 3 million dollars so far), goes directly to evaluated organizations who are making a difference in the lives of southern children.
Hancock people have always generously supported with their pledges those walkers whose legs are doing the praying-Harriet Chmela for 26 years and Faith Fenske for 34 years. Look for Faith with her pledge sheet at coffee hour and sign up to join her on Good Friday! Harriet is unfortunately unable to walk in the event this year, however she will be collecting contributions to support the cause: h.chmela@gmail.com, 7818626459. The Walk is 20 miles and pledges can be per mile or a lump sum.
