This week's scripture reading:

Luke 19:1-10

Jesus and Zacchaeus

He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycomore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.' So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, 'He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.' Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, 'Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.' Then Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.'

 CHILDREN

 Programs for Children

On February 10th we will begin a new unit called "Lost and Found" as we prepare for the season of Lent.  This will also mark a change in our classroom specialists and class leaders.

We give thanks for the time and talents of many adults who  have served in this capacity and as helpers the first have of the year:  Sarah Kuli, Gloria Amirault, Kristine and Michael Arena, Kim Bolman, Ann Boese,  Cynthia Will, Sarah Felton, Suzanne Mosher. Many Thanks!
No doubt you will see their faces in

Sue Lalone will be creating a lenten journey game board with the kids in February, and Nancy Schlecht will lead a special sand mosaic project for the kids in March.  We'll be sharing Jesus'  parables in the Storytelling Room and charting maps in Brainteasers.  If you would like to join in helping with the kids activities we'd welcome a few more hands, just shoot me an email to learn more.

Building Renovations Update from the Building Committee

Interested in the current state of the renovation plans for our church building?  Come to the Kathie Stuart room at 11:30 AM on Sunday, February 10, for an overview of the whole project.  See the latest drawings, ask questions, and give us your feedback.
A Special Thank You to the Choir
I have shared the following with the choir already, but thought it appropriate to share it with the wider congregation. I am enormously proud of the job our choir does every week, but thought this past Sunday is worth special mention. They worked on and off for over a year on Ave verum corpus--a very tricky piece that they sang beautifully and musically. This is the 7th church (in 5 states) that I I have served in over the past 27 years and I have never attempted this piece with a church choir before--none of the other groups was up to it. And what great versatility this group has! Rocking gospel music for the offertory and the Ave verum at communion--what a service! I hope you will join me in expressing your gratitude to this hard working group of your fellow members who give so generously of their time and talent every week.

----Mark Morgan, Director of Music

Fun, fast-paced, and a great place to learn about music, singing, and what it means to share your time and talent with the church. Any questions, feel free to contact Mark Morgan at mark@hancockchurch.org

Dana and Sean's soon-to-be-Baby Celebration last week

Dana and Sean's celebration this past Sunday was a great success.  For those of you who missed the party and want to contribute to our  group gifts to Baby Allen Walsh, please send or drop off your contribution by this Friday, February 8th. The Diaper Cake, pictured above, was created by Dana's Mom, Kathy Allen.
Questions? Contact  Robin DiGiammarino and/or  Yvette Kirby

Thank You from Dana & Sean

Sean and I are still basking in the glow of Sunday's baby shower celebration!  From the homemade cake to the colorful mobile to the thoughtful notes and gifts, we feel swaddled in love.  As we enter this new phase of life with all its uncertainties and unknowns, we carry with us your prayers, your stories, and your wisdom.  We are feel reassured and supported by an incredibly caring congregation of people who share our anticipation and excitement.

Thank you for providing not only for our spiritual well-being but also for the necessities that come with having a first baby - our car seat will be installed today, we are looking forward to signing up for a New Parent group at Isis in Arlington, and we are stocking up on diapers and baby wipes!  We love that a donation is being made in Baby Allen Walsh's name to Soul Possibilities in South Boston.  Sean and I believe that all children should have access to art and music education and we are glad that we can support such an enriching program for inner city children.

With the deepest gratitude,

Dana & Sean

Hancock Mardi Gras last Sunday

Updates from Staff

Meet Jane Park
Our new Administrative Assistant is Jane Park.  Jane is a 2004 graduate of Wellesley College, where she majored in Music with a concentration in Violin Studies.  Jane has administrative experience gained by working at From the Top and the Longy School of Music in Boston.  We think you will find her to be friendly and helpful, with all the skills necessary to thrive in this position.  We hope that you won't hesitate to stop in and introduce yourself, and to help her feel welcome at Hancock!

Jane is originally from Knoxville, TN but has lived in Cambridge for nine years. She currently teaches violin lessons at LB Music School in Medford. This year will be her sixth year playing in the New England Philharmonic, and her fifth year performing as a singer/songwriter.  Previously, she has worked for radio show From the Top, arts presenter World Music, and chamber music group Musicians of the Old Post Road.

The Rev. Dr. Ann Williams is our new Congregational Care Coordinator
Joy Fallon's departure for King's Chapel creates a significant opening on our church staff, and Paul and Dana are pleased to introduce the talented minister who will fill it.  Ann Williams was ordained in the Baptist tradition in 1982, and is currently affliliated with the Alliance of Baptists, which is the most progressive of all the Baptist traditions, and which is in full ministerial partnership with the United Church of Christ.  She is a member of a UCC congregation, The Union Church of Waban, in Newton.  In her ministry career, Ann has served as a hospice chaplain, minister of several congregations, and as a contract clergy person for a retirement community.  You will find her to be friendly, committed and compassionate.  She will be worshiping with us most Sunday mornings, and will of course work cooperatively with our Congregational Care Team and the ministers.  Ann will begin her work with us on March 1.  Welcome, Ann!

Prayers for Joy

We have been specially touched by Joy Fallon and her ministry at Hancock.  We are sad for us, but excited by the opportunity before her.  She has cared for us, prayed with and over us, and wrapped us in her warm smile and loving arms.  As she moves on in her career, we would like to put together a book of prayers to go with her to her new ministerial position.  If Joy has touched your life, please write a prayer for Joy and mail it to the church office, hand it to Dana or Paul, or sent it by email to me  at
cfbukys@gmail.com.  They can be handwritten or typed, personal to Joy, or a special prayer you would like to share with her, anything that will remind her that we love her and will miss her.  We will celebrate her time with us on February 10 in church and at coffee hour.  There will be paper and pens at coffee hour that day, so you can write one there as well.

Songs of Lament and Sorrow from A Joyful Noyse on Saturday, February 23rd, 7:30pm

A Joyful Noyse presents

The German Klagelied:

Songs of Lament and Sorrow

During the forty days of Lent, music, just as other human activities and practices, was dramatically affected in 17th and 18th century Germany.  Opera was replaced by Passion oratorios.  Secular concerts were replaced by pious and devotional sacred music.

At the end of the 17th century the residents of Lübeck gathered at St. Mary's Co8hurch to hear Dietrich Buxtehude's sacred cycle Membra Jesu nostri.  Incorporating scripture and the text of the Medieval hymn Salve mundi salutare, each of the seven sections of the piece is a meditation on a part of Christ's crucified body. In Dresden, during Holy Week in 1722, one could hear the haunting setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah composed by Jan Dismas Zelenka. The citizens of Hamburg and Berlin came to concert halls to hear the Passion oratorio Der Tod Jesu during the Lenten season of 1755.  Both Carl Heinrich Graun (Berlin) and Georg Philipp Telemann (Hamburg) had set the same text written by Karl Wilhelm Ramler to music, and premieres of the two settings occurred within a week of each other.

On Saturday, February 23, at 7:30PM, in the candlelit Sanctuary of Hancock Church, 1912 Mass. Ave., Lexington, MA, you will have the opportunity to experience portions of these wonderfully emotive works presented by A Joyful Noyse.  Musical forces will include choir and soloists, with a period orchestra comprised of violins, viole da gamba, baroque flutes, recorders and harpsichord.  A donation of $10 will be accepted to help maintain the music programs at Hancock Church.

Hancock Church Security

Do you ever wonder who locks up the church at night and who turns off the lights?

Too often the answer is no one!

Hancock Church depends on all users of the church to be responsible for making sure that our facility remains safe and secure and that we do not needlessly waste energy.  Thus, we would like to remind everyone of the following simple steps we can take to do this:

  • At all times please use ONLY the lower front entrance or the rear entrance to enter and leave the church. The narthex doors should only be used for events in the sanctuary or chapel. The doors by the nursery school, off of Clark Hall, or out of the kitchen are for emergency exit use only. Signs will be place at these entrances / exits to remind you.  Of course, the handicap entrance can be used as needed and in the event of an emergency the closest exit should always be used.
  • Anytime you are the last group to use the building and anytime you are leaving at or after 9 PM please check both the front and rear exits and lock the doors as you leave. This is accomplished by simply placing the door lock knob in the vertical position and should be done after 9 PM even if there are others still in the building.
  • Please turn off the lights in any room you are using as you leave and turn off all hallway lights as you exit the building.

We all take steps to protect our homes and valued items and we are asking you to take these simple steps to help protect Hancock.

Thanks!

Each lesson will focus on Old and New Testament scripture, reflections or devotions, and group discussions. Please join us for one or all of our meetings at 9am on Sunday mornings in the Wilson Room. June Cooper of City Mission Society leads Lenten study and reflection workshops: The City in Biblical Scripture

An invitation to personal contemplation as we discern how God calls us to work for justice and peace in the world.

Led by Rev. June Cooper, Executive Director, City Mission Society
Sunday March 3rd & 10th, 11:30 a.m., Pearson Room

The first explicit mention of a city is found in Genesis 4:17. And in the final book of the Bible, the Holy City appears as the bride of God in Revelation 21. The Bible has a lot to say about the City.  We will explore the Bible to understand: the positive and negative pictures of the city in scripture, how God feels about the city, what does God want for the city and its people, what did Jesus want for the city, some of the characteristics of the Cities visited in the book of Acts, and the significant of the vision for the Holy City in Revelation.

Havruta-- A Dialogical Approach to Biblical Texts with Paul Shupe

An invitation to participate with Senior Minister Paul Shupe in a unique style of Bible Study during Lent and Easter.  The study is called Havruta, a Hebrew word that describes a dialogical approach to biblical texts. We'll do this in a small group of no more than 10, including Paul. We will meet weekly, and look deeply into Luke's stories of the arrest, trial, death and resurrection of Jesus. Most of the study will take place in pairs, with conversation partners. This style of study is how Rabbi's prepare and are trained.

Continuity and the establishment of trust in community is essential to the process. If you cannot attend at least six of the eight evenings listed above, it would not be fair to the group to participate.  As such, a commitment is asked for attendance for at least six of the eight sessions noted below - please contact Paul Shupe to register for this series.  No previous experience or perceived expertise is required, just the willingness to enter into an intentional, disciplined study group for this short time.

The Havruta gatherings will be in the Wilson Room, Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:45 pm on the following dates:

    February 20 and 27
        March 6, 13, and 20
        April 3, 10, and 24

If you would like more information and to sign up for Havruta please
contact Paul Shupe at: Paul@hancockchurch.org.
