Outdoor Workday: THIS Saturday October 27th, 9am-1pm
The Prudential Committee will hold an OUTDOOR Work Day on Saturday, October 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for all those outdoor chores that need attention as we head into the winter season. We are still gathering the list of projects, so if you have recommendations of things to be added, please contact Carmen Kalsow (information below). No specific expertise is needed that day, just a willingness to join in and maybe to try new things (instruction provided); bring your gardening gloves and rakes and any other gardening tools that you find indispensable. We hope we will have a big group come to work with us because the more who come, the faster we will be done. (If October 27 is not possible for you, we will hold another Indoor Work Day on November 13 so mark your calendar now -- more information to follow. Call or email Carmen Kalsow with questions (<kalsow@rcn.com> or 781-258-9286).

Hancock Church Remembrances
On Sunday, November 4, we will give thanks and celebrate the lives of several Hancock members who have recently passed and are being commemorated with plaques in our Remembrance Hall. During the service, we will remember their generous and meaningful contributions to building our foundations of faith and service. A short prayer service will be held in the Memorial Garden immediately following the regular Sunday service.
We invite you to add the name of a family member or special friend who shared a deep connection to our Hancock community, so that all can celebrate their faith journeys, their many contributions to Hancock Church and our affection for one another. Please contact Rosemarie Sauermann (rosemarie@sauermann.com) or Bill Erickson (berickson@bfearc.com), co-chairs of the Memorial Garden Committee, before October 22 if you wish to include someone special in the November 4 remembrances.

October Book Group: The Seasons and Cycles of Spiritual Life--in Pearson Room @ 7:15pm
There are seasons of our lives. We don't stay in one constant place. Instead, depending on our life's experiences, our relationship with God changes and evolves. And it's not usually in a linear fashion - there are cycles, where we learn the same lesson in new ways. An opportunity to talk about spiritual practices that help us to learn and grow in whatever season of our spiritual life we may find ourselves in, centered on readings from sections of Naked Spirituality by Brian McLaren - open to women and men. Two copies of the book will be available in the Potter Library. Group led by Becca Lockwood, Seminarian For more information contact Daryl Battin - darylbattin@gmail.com or 781-789-3763 |
When God's People Grieve--Wednesdays, open to all
"Abraham's wife Sarah died at Hebron, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her." Genesis 22:2
What do God's people do when their hearts are broken with grief?
Come join with others who are mourning losses, to explore this question that has perplexed faithful people from the beginning of time. Come to a safe space to quietly look at scripture, art and music, as ways to begin to heal our hearts. Facilitated by Joy Fallon, Congregational Care Coordinator
Wednesdays, October 17, 24, and November 7, 14, morning session 9:30 - 11 AM or evening session 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. This group will be offered twice on Wednesdays, so that it can be accessible to those who prefer daytime gatherings, and those who work during the day. (Note that the group does not meet on Oct 31st).
If possible, please plan to come to all four sessions, but drop-ins are also welcome.

Socks are pouring in--arriving by car, by courier, by airmail! As of Tuesday, October 23rd, we have received 185 pairs. We need only 415 more pairs by November 4th to reach our goal of 600.
Yay white socks! Please donate some. Hancock's Junior Youth Organization (JYO) and the Christian Service Committee (CSC) are working together to collect socks that will be distributed by our friends at the Cambridge Outdoor Church and by City Mission Society (via their partner, Pilgrim Church in Dorchester). The Outdoor Church hands out 80 pairs of socks each weekend, or 320 pairs each month. As it gets cold outside wouldn't it be kind to offer them a month's supply? In addition, City Mission Society will use as many socks as we can imagine giving, their need is so great. Please don't forget to bring as many adult men's and women's socks (size medium, large, or extra large) as you would like between now and November 4th. You can drop donations in boxes located outside the church office, in the Narthex, and in the coffee hour room any day until November 4th , when the socks will be distributed to needy folks in Cambridge and Dorchester.
We're aiming for Hancock to donate 600 pairs of new white socks. If you have already donated-thanks! We'll also accept a check or cash if you prefer us to buy them for you. Sometimes a little thing like clean white socks can make a big difference. Thank you in advance from JYO and CSC.

Drivers Wanted
Congregational Care knows of people who would like to come worship on Sunday mornings, but are unable to get here on their own. If you'd be willing to drive occasionally, you'd make a big difference. Not only will more people get to church; those of us at church will get to see friends we've been missing!
