A Note of Thanks to Hancock from Tom Battin:

On behalf of my father and the rest of my family, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many members of the Hancock community who made my Mom's memorial service this past Sunday such a special event.  I had a chance to thank some of you personally but wanted to make sure everyone involved knows how much my family appreciates your efforts.

Welcome to Hancock Dinner Sunday October 21st

The Welcoming Committee invites all who would like to learn more about Hancock to come to a "Welcome to Hancock" Dinner Sunday October 21st at 5pm in the church Dining Room. You are encouraged to attend if you are new to Hancock or have been at Hancock a long time and already know where all the secret stairways are. Come to this informal dinner to meet others in the church, to learn more about Hancock's activities, its structure and mission, and what it means to be a member. Rev. Paul Shupe will give a brief presentation. You will have a chance to ask all your questions about how this large, active church operates. For more information or to RSVP, email Welcoming and Membership Committee Co-Chair Julia Potter at welcoming@HancockChurch.org

Join Hancock Church on October 28th

Hancock is planning to welcome new members into the church family on Sunday, October 28th, both in the morning service at 10 am and in the evening service @ The Well at 6:15pm. If you are interested in joining on the 28th, please contact the church office or email membership@HancockChurch.org. New members join the church by affirmation of faith or letter of transfer from their previous church.

Outdoor Workday: Saturday October 27th, 9am-1pm

The Prudential Committee will hold an OUTDOOR Work Day on Saturday, October 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for all those outdoor chores that need attention as we head into the winter season.  We are still gathering the list of projects, so if you have recommendations of things to be added, please contact Carmen Kalsow (information below).  No specific expertise is needed that day, just a willingness to join in and maybe to try new things (instruction provided); bring your gardening gloves and rakes and any other gardening tools that you find indispensable.  We hope we will have a big group come to work with us because the more who come, the faster we will be done.  (If October 27 is not possible for you, we will hold another Indoor Work Day on November 13 so mark your calendar now -- more information to follow. Call or email Carmen Kalsow with questions (<kalsow@rcn.com> or 781-258-9286).

Hancock Church Remembrances

Remembrances On Sunday, November 4, we will give thanks and celebrate the lives of several Hancock members who have recently passed and are being commemorated with plaques in our Remembrance Hall. During the service, we will remember their generous and meaningful contributions to building our foundations of faith and service. A short prayer service will be held in the Memorial Garden immediately following the regular Sunday service.

We invite you to add the name of a family member or special friend who shared a deep connection to our Hancock community, so that all can celebrate their faith journeys, their many contributions to Hancock Church and our affection for one another. Please contact Rosemarie Sauermann (rosemarie@sauermann.com) or Bill Erickson (berickson@bfearc.com), co-chairs of the Memorial Garden Committee, before October 22 if you wish to include someone special in the November 4 remembrances.

Wednesdays, October 17, 24, and November 7, 14, morning session  9:30 - 11 AM or evening session 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. This group will be offered twice on Wednesdays, so that it can be accessible to those who prefer daytime gatherings, and those who work during the day. Bagels and Bible: Every Sunday 9-9:45am in the Wilson Room

Hancock is starting another Sunday morning discussion group called Bagels and Bible. This discussion-based group is designed for individual adults or families with high school aged children. Childcare is available for younger children. Drop in for a single session, a couple of meetings, or the entire six weeks. Join us in the Wilson Room at 9 m on Sunday mornings starting on October 14th for lively conversation and free bagels.

Our first course will focus on the parables of Jesus. We'll explore the cultural context of first century Judea, trace connections between the Old and New Testaments, and examine the rich symbolism of Jesus' most instructive stories. We will provide the resources to start the conversation but we're most interested in hearing your personal interpretations.

If you would like to learn more about Bagels and Bible, please contact Kerra Fletcher at harold3513@hotmail.com or Jason Troutman at j.e.troutman@hotmail.com.

October Book Group: The Seasons and Cycles of Spiritual Life--in Pearson Room @ 7:15pm

There are seasons of our lives. We don't stay in one constant place. Instead, depending on our life's experiences, our relationship with God changes and evolves. And it's not usually in a linear fashion - there are cycles, where we learn the same lesson in new ways. An opportunity to talk about spiritual practices that help us to learn and grow in whatever season of our spiritual life we may find ourselves in, centered on readings from sections of Naked Spirituality by Brian McLaren - open to women and men. Two copies of the book will be available in the Potter Library.  Group led by Becca Lockwood, Seminarian

White Socks make a difference and you can too: Hancock Sock Drive to Benefit the Homeless.
Yay white socks!  Please donate some. Hancock's Junior Youth Organization (JYO) and the Christian Service Committee (CSC) are working together to collect socks that will be distributed by our friends at the Cambridge Outdoor Church and by City Mission Society (via their partner, Pilgrim Church in Dorchester). The Outdoor Church hands out 80 pairs of socks each weekend, or 320 pairs each month. As it gets cold outside wouldn't it be kind to offer them a month's supply? In addition, City Mission Society will use as many socks as we can imagine giving, their need is so great. Please don't forget to bring as many adult men's and women's socks (size medium, large, or extra large) as you would like between now and November 4th.  You can drop donations in boxes located outside the church office, in the Narthex, and in the coffee hour room any day until November 4th , when the socks will be distributed to needy folks in Cambridge and Dorchester.

We're aiming for Hancock to donate 600 pairs of new white socks. If you have already donated-thanks! We'll also accept a check or cash if you prefer us to buy them for you. Sometimes a little thing like clean white socks can make a big difference. Thank you in advance from JYO and CSC.

 Drivers Wanted
