Students Celebrate the Creative Arts, Collaborate to Produce Book of Illustrated Poetry, And Support Relay for Life!
The WHS Community is invited to attend "The Celebration of the Nature and Respect of Life Art and Poetry Exhibit". This exhibit will take place in the WHS Fine Arts Lobby on Monday night, April 25th from 5-7PM.
Students from Mrs. Kathleen Petka's Studio Art and Drawing and Painting classes have interpreted and illustrated poems written by Mr. Greg Fleenor's AP English Literature classes in the collage technique of the renowned artist Eric Carle. The subject matter of the illustrated poetry is focused on nature, respect, and life. In addition, a book of these illustrated poems will be sold as a fundraiser with proceeds donated to Relay for Life in memory of Cara Seckman.
This project began with Mr. Fleenor's Literature students choosing a poetry form and then writing a poem following that form, meter, and rhyme scheme. Seventy-five poems were selected to be illustrated by Ms. Petka's art students in the style of the popular children's book author Eric Carle, whose works are presently on display at the High Museum in Atlanta. The student illustrators used Carle's technique of layered tissue paper to create textured images that represent the poems' main themes. Together, these students have created a finished product to be displayed in the Art and Poetry Exhibit. In addition to the exhibition, a book entitled The Nature and Respect of Life has been produced through the efforts of Mr. Dan Campagna and his Graphic Arts students.
Students in the Principal's Leadership Committee (PLC), under the direction of Mrs. Vivian Baldwin, have joined this collaborative ensemble to publish and market, The Nature and Respect of Life, with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life". This year, the PLC and Walton High School are relaying in loving memory of Cara Seckman, Class of 2015, who was an active member of the PLC and an inspiration to the entire WHS family. Cara was known for her exceptional creativity, her zeal for life and her kind, gentle spirit. This project celebrates all these qualities and is a fitting tribute to Cara's continuing impact in the lives of those who loved her.
The limited edition commemorative books can be purchased on-line or at the exhibition/showing. This special book, created by WHS students in memory of one of their peers and published to raise money in the fight against cancer, is offered to the WHS Community for $20. Thank you for your support of this project. Please make plans to join us at the Celebration Exhibit!

Lunch Revamp for WHS
We are excited to announce that celebrated executive chef Matthew Basford of Canoe will be working with Cobb County Public School's Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) to help develop some new flavors and entrees to add to the school food menu. Chef Basford has been at the famed restaurant since 2005, and previously worked at Dominique's in New Orleans. He is originally from Australia, where he started his love for the culinary field, and is committed to serving fresh, seasonal ingredients at his restaurant.
Chef Basford understands that the restraints of the school food program are very complex and will take some time to master. He will work with FNS over the next few months to develop some innovative culinary options. Thanks to the proactive work on this front from the Walton PTSA and Foundation, Walton High School will be one of the test locations for Basford's menus in the fall!
Healthy, delicious food DOES belong in our school cafeterias. We can't wait to sample Chef Basford's new creations at WHS. If you would like more information on what FNS is doing to provide quality meals for our students, visit CCSD FNS.

Give your "Cool Things" to "Cool Girls!"
The PTSA Community Outreach Club will hold its annual Cool Girls Drive April 18-22. Bring gently used accessories, pajamas, room décor, book bags, and school supplies for school age girls to the donation box at the front office during the drive.
Cool Girls is a philanthropy dedicated to the self-empowerment of girls. Their community partners, mentors, and volunteer networks support girls in all aspects of their development - breaking the cycles of poverty, low self-esteem, and teen pregnancy. Their life skills programs develop girls into confident women through education and exposure to a broader world of opportunity. Donation receipts for tax purposes and information on verification to record an hour of volunteer service can be obtained from the PTSA Front Office Volunteer on duty at the time you make your donation. Make a difference in the lives of underprivileged girls and get a service hour for cleaning out your closet! It's a win/win!
Thank you for your support of this great philanthropy.
