News, Resources and Volunteer Opportunities
Mentors available for Walton students: Through the Walton Career Coach program, students can sign up to be matched with up to 3 professionals of their choice. Students can choose Coaches whose career fields are best suited to their interests and career goals. Coaches offer opportunities for students to exchange emails and phone calls, conduct informational interviews and visit their place of work. We have a diverse group of Coaches and this is a great opportunity for our students to get hands on experiences that can help them make better choices of high school courses, colleges to investigate and careers to pursue. To get started, parents and students please visit the Walton Career Coach webpage

Volunteers needed for the Media Center: The media center has volunteer opportunities for WEB days and normal media center hours.   For WEB days, you would be involved in checking students in and out of school. To sign up for WEB duties, please click here:  2015-2016 WEB Day Volunteers.  For regular media center duties, we ask that you plan to work a one to two hour shift, but you may not need to stay that long. You may work any time on your designated day during normal media center hours. To sign up please click here:  2015-2016 WHS Media Center Volunteers. Questions? Please contact Archana Patel at archana301@yahoo.com

Parent Assistance Needed: Parents, once again, we must tap your continued commitment to the mission of our school by asking you to complete the AdvancED/SACS Parent Survey, which is now available on-line by clicking here.  The AdvancED/SACS Survey is provided to all parents, students, and faculty as a requirement of the Cobb County School District AdvancED/SACS accreditation process. By collecting this data, the district is able to compile a growing, longitudinal view of stakeholder data over time. Responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to AdvancED's eProve for analysis.  Please note that this is a different survey than you recently completed on-line for the Georgia Department of Education Health Survey.  As always, we are appreciative and thankful for your continued participation and support!!

From the Media Center: Order spring plants and bulbs from Dutch Mill and the Media Center will receive 50% profit on each sale. All items are guaranteed to grow and bloom, and orders are shipped directly to the address you provide. Please visit the website found here, click on "Spring Bulbs" at the bottom of the webpage for details on the plants and program. Thanks for your support!
Foundation
Want a gift that will keep on giving?  A donation to the WHS Foundation is your answer!  Your contribution will:

1) provide you with a tax donation as we are a non-profit, 501C-3 organization;
2)  help reduce class sizes in core curriculum classes in the 2016-17 school year;
3) promote better student/teacher relationships, permit more hands-on learning and allow for more interactive labs and oral assignments;
4) provide long-term positive results as the benefits of smaller class sizes can have a cumulative impact on students over their high school experience and beyond; and,
5) maintain your home value as the Walton High School cluster currently enjoys higher prices and faster sales than other school clusters within Cobb County.

You can "Make A Difference" by donating to the WHS Foundation before March 31, 2016.  Please click here to learn more about the Foundation.  Please click here to donate.

Dine for a Difference:
 To raise additional funds for the Make a Difference campaign to reduce class sizes, the Walton Foundation has partnered with a different local restaurant each week in March. Restaurant patrons can either show a hard or soft copy of the attached flyer or simply tell their server they are a Walton family, and that's enough to get us credit for the sale. Dine for a Difference between March 28-31 at Chili's Providence Square and receive 10% off your check.  For more information, click here: Dine for a Difference
Legislative News
2016 Georgia General Assembly Session Ends: The last day of the general session (known as "Sine Die") was Thursday, March 24. Several bills were passed by both chambers and are on the governor's desk including the "campus carry" (HB 859) and "religious freedom." (HB757) Gov. Deal has until May 3rd to sign all legislation that has  passed.

Of particular interest to stakeholders of public education, the 2017 budget was approved on March 23. Highlights impacting education include:
  • $300 million for districts to eliminate teacher furloughs, increase instructional days, and increase teacher salaries
  • $124 million for enrollment growth and training and experience
  • $29.4 million for Move On When Ready increased enrollment
  • $14.3 million in bonds for school buses
  • $3.2 million for information technology supporting local school systems
  • 3% raises for lunchroom workers, bus drivers, nurses, RESA personnel and others
The increased premium for non-certificated health insurance remains at $100 so as of January 1, 2017, the rate will be $846 per employee per month. This means that while some non-certified employees could be eligible for raises, their insurance premiums are also increasing. Stay tuned!
