Education Funding update: At last week's Education Forum at Walton, we heard from experts in the field of educational funding, administrators, and teachers regarding the potential changes to the school funding formula and the impact the new formula would have on the state of Georgia and Cobb County. Under the proposed formula, Cobb County School District would receive $471.1 million, a 1.49% increase over this year's level of funding from the state. However, this amount is $28.7 million less than what the current funding formula calls for and is the smallest percentage increase in the metro area. This is a cause for great concern and creates a need for parents to make their voices heard. We have provided these resources for you to become informed about the details of this issue and information on how you can advocate for our public school system.
- Q and A about the state of educational funding in Georgia
- Policy Report on the new school funding formula from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute
- Next Steps you can take to make your opinion heard, including contact information
- Sample letter to legislators concerning the future of educational funding
The PTSA urges all members and stakeholders to contact the members of the Education Reform Commission as well as your elected officials to advocate for the future of our public education system. Thank you.
The Great American Smokeout: Walton says, "Tobacco, oh no, I'm not buying it!" Tobacco use is the single largest cause of preventable deaths in America and millions of people are living with serious illnesses caused by tobacco smoking, chewing and second hand smoke. Our goal is to educate students about the health consequences of tobacco use and gain their commitment to stop tobacco use or to never start to use this highly addictive drug. Please encourage your student to participate in this event outside the commons on Thursday, November 19, 2015, 10:30 to 1:30. The event will include videos, take home information, displays, a gift card raffle and students can earn more chances to win by playing various fun and informative games. Learn more here. Lastly, if you are a smoker and want help to quit, call the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line: 1-877-270-STOP.
Scholastic Book Fair: The Media Center is hosting the book fair Nov 12th-20th. If you are not able to come in to shop or don't find the book you are looking for, shop our online store here. The End to Cyberbullying Act: This act was signed into law by Gov. Deal in May 2015 and gives a broader definition of bullying to include acts of bullying off school property. Cobb County's disciplinary policy was updated to align with the new legislation. Please click here for more information and for resources.
