Parishioners Gather for Retreat Day

"What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" -- poet Mary Oliver

On the afternoon of Sunday March 16, more than 100 parishioners gathered to explore this question at an afternoon retreat led by Fr. Steve Bevans, SVD, of Catholic Theological Union.  Following the 11:15 a.m. Mass and a light lunch, Fr. Bevans led a talk, reflection, and discussion titled "Grace Upon Grace: Christian Vocation and the Joy of the Gospel".

Drawing on the wisdom of our Catholic tradition, scripture, contemporary theologians, spiritual writers, and Pope Francis, we explored the three dimensions of vocation: the call to be myself, to be a disciple, and to a particular state such as married or single, lay or ordained, lay ministry or secular profession.  Between each portion of the presentation, a classical guitarist led a quiet musical reflection.  Two quotes were emphasized to sum up the definition of vocation: "God calls me for others through others," (Edward Hahnenberg) and it is found "where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need" (Frederick Buechner).

Parishioner Dani Jachino found the day rich and inspiring. "He really made me think and appealed to all ages!" Maria Leonard added, "Everyone seemed to find a nugget to take with them." Susan Norris shared that she found the day to be "Terrific. Fr. Bevans was really marvelous -- both in the content of his material and his presentation of it. And the guitarist added a very powerful element... Paul and I benefited greatly from it. Everyone we talked to greatly enjoyed it as well."

The day concluded with a spirited question and answer period, followed by Vespers in the upper church.  It provided quiet and beautiful time to contemplate the thoughts and ideas that were stirred up through the day, and tend to the "inner work" required to form a listening relationship with God.

"Life grows by being given away, and it weakens in isolation and comfort. Indeed, those who enjoy life most are those who leave security on the shore and become excited by the mission of communicating life to others" --  Pope Francis, EG 10, quoting Aparecida
