Saint Clement Welcomes Salvadoran Artist Fernando Llort

Fernando Llort at Saint Clement On Sunday, August 11, Saint Clement welcomed world-renowned Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort to the parish. This rare opportunity was quite an honor for Saint Clement due to Mr. Llort's limited travel; also, he was accompanied by his wife Estela, daughter María José, and Consulate General to El Salvador, Patricia Maza-Pittsford. Following the 11:15 a.m. Mass, Mr. Llort held an exhibit of his artwork in Fireside Hall, where art was also available for purchase. There, parishioners had the opportunity to experience his faith-filled art, as well as view various parish-owned pieces. Those who bought pieces of art were able to get them signed by Mr. Llort.

Hailed as the founder of the artisan movement in El Salvador, Fernando Llort is credited with creating the artistic expression of the entire county. Inspired by his faith and the potential of a small seed, he began training multitudes of Salvadorans to earn a living through creating colorful seeds, crosses, paintings, and murals. Proceeds from the  August 11 sales benefited the Foundation of Fernando Llort, aimed at teaching art to the Salvadoran people and promoting the wellness and development of the human being.

Most specifically, the foundation empowers artisan women to be entrepreneurs, develops alternative incomes for those in coastal communities after primary sources were lost due to ecological changes, and creates scholarships for the program Por Ser Nina (Because I Am A Girl), enabling Salvadoran girls to continue studies. Many of the foundation's projects are also aimed at youth violence prevention through art and culture.

Some works by Fernando Llort owned by parish staff.
For several years, parishioners who traveled to El Salvador to support our sister parish, 22 de Abril, had the opportunity to visit Fernando Llort's studio in San Salvador. This past April's group also had the privilege to meet Mr. Llort; many participants purchased his artwork and had the artist sign their pieces. A couple of the pieces Fr. Ken bought support the program Por Ser Nina (see above), and two of Mr. Llort's pieces can be found in Fireside Hall, signed by the artist himself for the children at Saint Clement. So many can attest to the faith-filled beauty his art brings to their lives and the lives of so many in El Salvador.

We were so honored by Fernando Llort's presence at Saint Clement, and look forward to continued relationships with the artist and his foundation.

"Loved Twice" Baby Clothes Collected Will Clothe More Than 50 Babies for a Year!

Loved Twice is a non-profit organization clothing newborns in need with quality reused baby clothing for the first year of life. We collect gently-used baby clothes, sort these precious garments into boy and girl wardrobes-in-a-box, and distribute them exclusively through social workers in hospitals, shelters, and clinics. This is a nationwide organization, with a local chapter in Chicago.

In early August, Loved Twice hosted a clothing drive at Saint Clement Parish. With the help of 11 Saint Clement volunteers (pictured above), we sorted 52 boxes for babies in the Chicagoland area.
These boxes were delivered to Sister Joellen at Casa Catalina, and to New Moms Inc., a center for teen mothers. We'd like to give a big thanks to our Saint Clement volunteers: Joan Jablonski (and her daughters), Susie Bell, Dora and Alexandra Bussey, Coleen Halloran, Daniela Pavan, Koren Zelek, and Yida Capriccioso. We couldn't have sorted and boxed these clothes without you!

Over the past two years, Loved Twice Chicago has held three drives in conjunction with Saint Clement, resulting in clothing 145 babies. We couldn't have done this without the support of Saint Clement. We host clothing drives twice a year, in August and December. If you would like to donate any gently used items/clothes, please contact Paula Quinn. Please note, Paula is happy to take donations throughout the year.
