Saint Clement School Closes Another Fabulous Year Today
As you receive this newsletter, Saint Clement School students will be on their way to celebrating a fun-filled summer after an action-packed year in the classrooms at 2524 North Orchard Street. Today, each class reflects on the wonderful highlights of the 2012-13 school year:
 |
Preschoolers perform the Three Piggy Opera.
|
Pre-K debuted the "Three Piggy Opera" this year! It had all the true components of an opera. All the children had either a speaking or singing part. They practiced very hard to perform this classic tale. They also helped to create their costumes and the set. It was a huge hit and the start of a new Saint Clement tradition!
This year Kindergarten has gone from learning letters to writing stories! Each student learned the writing process and has completed a final draft -- with pictures -- of their own story. We are very proud of them and everyone is ready for first grade!

First grade pioneers traveled West (to Jonquil Park), but were held up by five bandits (dads) trying to steal their milk. Click image for video.

T he first graders enjoyed their last theme, Pioneers. We have traveled back in time to imagine what life would be like back in 1840. We took a wagon train trip West dressed in pioneer clothes. It was a great day! Our last week of school will be a special time to remember the special memories of first grade. We remember our class prayers, special friends, and special field trips we have taken. We know it is a bittersweet time but are super excited for summer!
The second graders are completing an insect research project. They are working very hard and are looking forward to having 48 newly published insect books to read!
The third graders were very excited to learn about the different types of communities last fall. They even had the opportunity to cheer on the DePaul Blue Demons in a soccer match in an urban environment. We also traveled to the Botanic Gardens where we explored plant life and did hands-on experiments. They loved dissecting all the different parts of a flower! After a trip to the Adler Planetarium, students started working on a planet research project. After many days of research and hard work, they wrote their final papers, made posters, and presented to the class. Everyone learned so much and did an excellent job presenting!

Fourth graders enjoy the Cubs' dugout.
|
The fourth grade recently completed their second round of country reports. Every fourth grader participates in the group project throughout the course of the year. Students pick a country from around the world and present on its culture and history. The students are also working on artist biographies where they research prominent artists and present on their findings. The year will finish up with two field trips to the Morton Arboretum Nature Center and a tour of Wrigley Field.
Fifth grade attended the last all school Mass with their Pre-K "Mass buddies." We also spent an afternoon shadowing the sixth grade to help prepare for the transition to middle school. We celebrated the end of a great year with a field trip to Navy Pier. We took the SeaDog architecture cruise and learned fascinating facts about some of the great architecture in Chicago.
The sixth graders just experienced a fun-filled trip to Medieval Times! After seeing an action-packed show, the students took a tour through a daunting dungeon. Each student left with a little more insight and knowledge from the time period, as well as many souvenirs! Now, the sixth graders are wrapping up the year with several projects and papers. We are looking forward to the end of the year celebration at Oz Park and a special treat from Milk&More. We are so proud of the sixth grader's success and completion of their first year of middle school!
The seventh graders hosted the Graduation Breakfast for the Class of 2013, and all the time and hard work they put in paid off. The eighth graders were pleased with the celebration that included elaborate decorations, great breakfast food, entertainment, awards, and a Breakfast Book with letters from the eighth graders' parents, all the teachers, and all the classes. Now, the seventh grade is looking forward to a simple day of fun at Lincoln Park Zoo to finish off the year on a positive note!
The eighth graders wrapped up their academic work with a series of final papers projects, and exams. They enjoyed celebrating all of their hard work with a week in Washington, D.C., where they had a chance to spend time together and enjoy our nation's capital. It was a whirlwind, but wonderful experience, followed by an exciting week of graduation festivities! The students spent some time reflecting at the graduation retreat and sharing memories and accomplishments at the graduation honors assembly. The seventh graders hosted a lovely breakfast in honor of the graduates, and their graduation week culminated with the graduation ceremony on Friday, May 31. Congratulations, Class of 2013!

Saint Clement Class of 2013 Creed
As we, the Class of 2013, look back on our years at Saint Clement, we see that there are many values that have played an important role in helping us become who we are today. No matter how different we are, we all have certain things in common that we cherish. We have compiled our beliefs into this creed, which we will now recite:
We believe that family provides the support, encouragement, and love that we need in order to achieve great things.
We are grateful for our family and for the extended family that we have found in the Saint Clement community.
We believe in friendship and appreciate the qualities of a good friend, including loyalty, kindness, compassion, honesty, and respectfulness.
We believe in God and His importance in our life.
We believe in love and that it is the binding force between all things.

We believe that education is necessary to have a knowledgeable and thoughtful society.
We also believe that teachers make this possible and are thankful for their guidance and for enabling us to learn and grow.
We believe that we are all unique individuals and that we must stay true to ourselves.
We believe that we should embrace the things that make life more enjoyable like sports, music, and other hobbies.
Finally, we believe in happiness and laughter, because they give us hope and give meaning to life.
Sincerely,
Saint Clement School Class of 2013

Saint Clement School's Budding Artists
 |
Mrs. Peck and the 7th graders enjoy the
Museum of Contemporary Art
|
This year in art, we have added more than 2,400 pieces of artwork to our online student gallery, where portfolios will grow with individuals each year at Saint Clement School. Some favorite projects for each grade level include (click on each link to see the gallery): Kindergarten, Color Wheel Crabs; First Grade, Owls at Night; Second Grade, Three Crosses; Third Grade, 3-D Aquariums; Fourth Grade, My Galaxy; Fifth Grade, Animal Masks; Sixth Grade, Monochromatic Self-Portrait; Seventh Grade, Radial Name Design; and Eighth Grade, Icon Portrait.
Students enjoyed using the iPad for art-making projects like the eighth graders' Digital Self Portrait. Saint Clement third grade student Catherine Foster will be honored at a special state-wide art exhibition in October. She was chosen along with 40 other students (from a pool of 600!) in grades K-12 for her Desert Landscape project.
Art teacher Kristen Peck escorted students in grades 1, 2, 5, 7, and 8 on art-related field trips to places such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the River North Art Gallery, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and a walking art and architecture tour in the loop.

Did You Know?
Farewell Receptions for Fr. Manny Dorantes Following Masses on Sunday, June 16
The Cardinal has asked our associate pastor, Fr. Manny Dorantes, to pursue advanced studies at Northwestern University, where he will be entering the MBA program full-time focusing on non-profit management. Thus, Fr. Manny will be leaving Saint Clement and his final day in the parish will be June 16. Saint Clement is immensely grateful for the years of service Fr. Manny has given to the parish. His passion for social justice has compelled us to be more attentive to the needs of the poor and vulnerable, and inspired us to put our faith into action. His insight has challenged us in our faith and encouraged us to strive for deeper holiness, greater communion, and wider service. Our thoughts and prayers will be with Fr. Manny as he embarks on this next journey!
We will hold receptions in Fr. Manny's honor on Sunday, June 16 following all the Masses - 8:00, 9:30, 11:15 a.m., and 7 p.m. Join us on the front lawn of the church to celebrate Fr. Manny and thank him for his years of service to Saint Clement. Please also hold him in your prayers as he embarks on this next journey. If you are planning to stay after Mass on June 16 to celebrate Fr. Manny, please do not block any cars in the church parking lot. Thank you! |
