Religious Education Program Closes Another Successful Year

Saint Clement was blessed with a dynamic year of Christian Formation for the children and families of our parish. This was due to the dedication of our Ministers of Catechesis who are willing to model and share how to pray, serve, give, learn as disciples of Christ.

The catechists evangelize by sharing their stories of faith and support the Catholic formation that starts at home with each family in our parish. A sincere THANK YOU goes out to more than 40 volunteers who help to make this happen each year. For the 2012-13 year, we celebrated 93 First Communions, heard 82 First Reconciliations, Confirmed 55, and had a total enrollment of 230 children.

Religious education families, students, and volunteers reflected on the past year:

Confirmation Retreat "My confirmation process at Saint Clement was a life-changing experience for me. After completing my service project, reflection paper, retreat, and discussions with my sponsor (my big brother, Paul), my spirituality has been raised to a whole new level. I realize now, how much I need God in my life. Without being confirmed, I would have never had this realization and wouldn't be who I am today."

-- Dana Coons, 8th grade student

"It was a wonderful experience meeting new people and sharing the same love for God while being a part of Saint Clement's Religious Education program. I learned so much from my peers and my teachers and truly got closer to God. Confirmation was the high point of this past year and I really enjoyed the retreat. I truly recommend the Religious Education program for kids who want to learn and get closer to God."

-- Patrick Breslin, 8th grade student

"The Religious Education program went beyond our expectations. The high points were when our son was a lector at the Feast of the Immaculate Conception evening Mass last fall, and then when we attended Family Reconciliation in January. Sharing these events made us more aware of our faith as a family."

-- Miller and Stephanie Bransfield, 6th grade parents

"Our daughter Abby has been enrolled in religious education class for the past two years. We are very happy with the biblical lessons that our daughter has learned. Her teachers are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching and she always comes home with handout worksheets from class that we can talk about at home. These worksheets provide good 'talking points' for us to start conversations about the biblical stories and real world lessons that help us parents teach our children about God and being a good Christian. Our three year old daughter Charlotte has also been asking us for two years when it is going to be her turn to go to class; she cannot wait!"

-- Laurie & Paul Rades, 1st grade parents

"I have so enjoyed my experience with Saint Clement's Religious Education program, working with the supportive staff, great catechists, and very enthusiastic students and families; my family and I feel so blessed to be a part of this parish. The high point of the year for me was during a discussion on 'Saints' when I mentioned two saints with special connections to Saint Clement, one being St. Jude, to whom former Saint Clement parishioner Danny Thomas asked for intercession, promising to give back if he was able to be successful in his career; he was successful and fulfilled his promise by building St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The other saint connected to Saint Clement Church is Mother Cabrini, born in in Italy in 1850, who often attended Mass at Saint Clement and passed away at nearby Columbus Hospital in 1917; her framed photo is next to the statue of St. Jude. The students were so excited by these connections to their parish, and to all of us; it brought up even more conversation and requests for specific directions as to exactly where the St. Jude statue resides in Saint Clement. This year was especially joyful for my family, as our older daughter made her First Communion with her classmates. The support from Fr. Simpson, the Religious Education staff and teachers, and the other families made the preparation and the Mass such a wonderful experience for us all."

-- Dr. Catherine Pesek Bird, 4th grade catechist

Jesus Day "For me, teaching religious education has awakened an awareness of the magnificence of the Catholic faith. In three years of teaching, I have tried to absorb as much as possible about our faith, and, in turn, I have tried to spark a similar appreciation for it in my students. While every lesson plan has an important message, I have found the most fruitful classes inspire students to share ideas with their classmates and explore some tough questions that may not be in the lesson plan at all. In the process, I have learned so much that I did not expect -- perhaps just as much as the students!"

-- Karen Koski, 4th grade catechist

First God Squad "Lock-In" Held

On Friday, May 10, seventeen teenagers attended a "Lock-In" held in Centennial Hall as part of a year-end event for the God Squad, Saint Clement's Youth Group for 8th-12th graders. The evening began with a Teaching Mass led by Fr. Manny in the chapel. All participants sat in a circle around the altar for an intimate and enlightening sharing of the Mass in which Fr. Manny took time for questions from the teenagers. Then a yummy meal of pizza was shared followed by some fantastic relay races. Next the students impressed the adult leaders with their knowledge of our church building through a scavenger hunt in the church itself.  Scavenging skills were rewarded by a most impressive ice cream bar back in the cafeteria followed by some hilarious skits and a round of "iPod Idol." The evening concluded with a candlelit prayer service in which the students wrote letters of affirmation to one another and created a "God Squad Lock Box" which will be held in Fahey I and opened again at the God Squad retreat next year.

The theme of the evening was "See You in the Eucharist" which is a phrase that is taken from one of our brothers (and Romero Scholarship recipient) in El Salvador. Many of the God Squad members have been touched by this phrase and have begun saying farewell to one another using these words.

The evening was both fun and prayerful. Bernadette Sayegh, one of the adult God Squad leaders, remarked, "The teens really displayed the many talents they have, from character building and teamwork, to athleticism and singing. They all bonded and had a great time together, even though some of the teens had never met each other before. They are all beautiful and special in their own way, and that really was what shined."

Young Adults Gather for Spring Retreat

Young Adult Community On May 11, the Saint Clement Young Adult Community -- members of our parish in their 20s and 30s -- met for the YAC Daylong Spring Retreat.

This year's theme was "Be Transformed" and after meeting at Fireside Hall, the young adults were! The passage selected for this year's theme  was Romans 12:2: "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect." Sometimes it is easy to forget to actively engage our faith in making choices that are good and pleasing to God. YAC Retreat About 60 young adults took that Saturday to reflect and pray about God's role in their daily lives. The retreat offered time to share with others in groups, and share with others about their relationships with God. They discovered how God is an active participant in their lives and seeks to transform minds and hearts to His will.

The retreat featured witness talks from our peers, along with Fr. Ken Simpson, who shared with us his wisdom on the topic of the call to holiness. "His talk wowed me," said one of the participants. "I came into this retread not knowing what I needed, but I left the day feeling like what I needed, I had received," said another. Participants attended the 5:00 p.m. Mass, and closed the evening by coming together once more for food, fun, and fellowship. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make this retreat an amazing experience.

Volunteers Needed for Summer Sack Lunches

For many years, Saint Clement parishioners have generously prepared sack lunches for the hungry, which are in turn handed out every Friday morning from the parish office. Thank you to all who have so faithfully contributed to this ministry over the past months and years! With summer right around the corner, we are currently scheduling volunteers for June through August.

Volunteers provide six sack lunches for their assigned Friday, making the lunches from home based on guidelines we provide. Lunches are then dropped off at the parish office on Thursdays and Friday mornings. Sign up once or get set on a monthly schedule. It's a wonderful activity to complete with your family and teach your children the importance of feeding the hungry! Please consider volunteering your time and resources for this important ministry. For more information or to sign up, please contact Maggie Hanley at 773-281-0371.
