Lenten Retreat for Young Ones Focuses on Holy Trinity

Many of Saint Clement's youngest parishioners set out to learn about the Holy Trinity as part of their Lenten journey last Saturday, March 2. The Clement Moms Spirituality Committee hosted the "Kids/Parents Lenten Retreat: The Holy Trinity" in Fireside Hall, with about 35 two- to six-year-olds, accompanied by their parents.

Kids Retreat Deacon Tim Sullivan led the two-hour retreat and kicked off the festivities by having parents ask their children, "Who is God?" This reflection led into Deacon Tim's discussion on the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Upon completion, he asked his eager audience if they had any questions, and one little friend asked "When was God born?" which led into further reflection about how God is enduring in all our lives.

Story time with Bede Swisher followed, with the book, How Big is God? The children loved Bede's animated presentation, acting out portions of the book. Children enjoyed creating art projects, such as three-leaf shamrocks designed to represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Organizer Kim Flynn and her committee saved a special treat for the end: shamrock sugar cookies graciously made by Natalie Recker! Thank you to Deacon Tim Sullivan, Bede Swisher, the volunteers, and all the parents who engaged their children in learning about the Holy Trinity!

Stories of Stewards

As part of our ongoing engagement process, we have come to realize the importance of parishioners sharing their personal stories of how they have connected with Saint Clement as an important factor in their lives. As a feature twice a month, we share the stories and reflections of our engaged parishioners who are living a stewardship life of prayer, service, and giving. This week we hear from Brian Slosson.

Brian Slosson "I have been a part of Saint Clement since July 2009, after I attended a Tuesday evening Theology on Tap. I remember driving down Deming Street (after getting lost and needing to ask for directions) and being surprised to find a beautiful church waiting at the end of the block. I was then amazed by the hundred or so Theology on Tap attendees and wondered why so many people go to this particular place.

The answer I found is that Saint Clement attracts others with members who are both serious about their faith and also joyful in living that faith. Through Saint Clement, I have grown in my relationship with God through participation in the Mass and countless prayer, service, and learning opportunities offered. I have made lasting friendships here with amazing people of faith who also want to grow in their relationship with God and do so with joy. (Note: There are a lot of funny people at Saint Clement.)

I am a member of the Young Adult Board and the winter retreat leadership team. I also sing in the Seraphim choir and am involved with YAC Adoration, volleyball, and Lakeview pantry volunteering. Good stewardship to me has meant helping others to grow in faith and to find a community at Saint Clement. Whether it is through the retreats or volleyball, it is satisfying to see people who are new to Saint Clement, or who perhaps do not even attend Mass regularly, rededicate themselves to their relationship with God, become more involved, and connect with peers.

Moreover, Saint Clement fosters this stewardship by encouraging leadership and new ideas from anyone in the community who wants to be involved. It is a community of faith in action. I am thankful I found Saint Clement."
