Dear

DUSTY & OLD...

No, not the owner of City Wine!  We are talking about a wine tasting where we open some older bottles of wine.

If you share our love of wine, or even a fraction of it, one of the dimensions of wine is how it ages.  After all, wine, like us human-kind, "evolves" with time.  There is the "youthful-exuberance" dimension, but then there is also the "mature-and-evolved" side.  Our mission is to help you explore and learn wine, so here we go... a chance to try some older whites and reds.

Please don't miss it!

COME TASTE FOUR "OLDIES-BUT-GOODIES"

Saturday - Feb 21
3-5 p.m.

2007 H. Lun Gewurztraminer - $17.99

From the Alto-Adige in Italy, and a winery that has been around since 1840.  Italian alps with southern hillsides.  This wine will "wow" you.  It is quite dry, has some heft, but its age balances it out.  What a gem!

1994 Tullio Zamo' Vigne dal Leon - $19.99

Are you kidding me??  1994 Pinot Bianco??  From Friuli, there is only one case of this available.  You will be amazedThink DINNER PARTY!

1996 Terreno Chianti Classico  - $18.99

From one of the oldest wine producers in Italy (this is something), this wine belies logic... it should not still be alive-and-kicking.  But it is.   Yes, it has lightened with age.  The trade-off with fruit and tertiary complexity is evident.  A very reasonable price for what this is.

2001 Sant'Elena Merlot - $14.99

We keep coming back to this Friulian winery as an example of one whose wines age gracefully.  This still has some density and chunky youth.  Merlot is not supposed to last this long in bottle.  Some sediment (a good and natural thing), truly "earth and dust" here.  $15??

Some other examples of older wines we have, collecting dust!:

1989 Chateau Cayrou (in magnum) - $75

You've had Argentina Malbecs, but probably not often French ones from Cahors, the only AOC in France where Malbec is "king".  This producer is known for it age-able wines, and the importer told me I had to try this.  It is surprisingly youthful and drinking very well.  What an amazing opportunity to try an older Malbec in a big bottle for such a reasonable price!

1995  Cantina Vignaioli Barbaresco - $50

Nebbiolo ages, Barolo but also some Barbaresco.  You are not even paying a premium for the cellaring, which has been immaculate for this wine.

2007 Vistorta Conte Brandolini d'adda - $20

Here is another Merlot that is aging gracefully.  Again, lots of earth, only French barrique oak, unfiltered, hand-harvested Bordeaux clones.  The count Brandolino is the wine maker, and is a native Venetian.

2005 Podere Sapaio Volpolo - $50

The Volpolo is from Bolgheri the same place as Sassicaia and Ornellaia, is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot and spent 14 months in French barriques. The names of the wines Sapaio and Volpolo come from ancient Tuscan grapevines and give homage to the wines' locale and history.   "The Margaux of Tuscany"

2004 Boislauzon Cuvee de Quet Chateauneuf-du-Pape - $55

Great producer's top cuvee, and this bottling from other vintages scores in the upper 90's fairly often.  Here, you have a 10-year-old CDP, that still has lots of life, and a
very reasonable price.

"Inky dark ruby color. Explosively aromatic nose offers a remarkable range of red and dark berry aromas that seem to build exponentially in the glass. Lush, round and sweet-you could use this for a kir, although it might be too strong-but also fresh and focused, with tangy acids sharpening the raspberry, cassis and wild strawberry fruit. Finishes silky, fresh and very long, with impressive purity and focus."
-IWC 93-95 Points

2001 Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Villero - $100

We only have a few of these well-preserved Baroli left, just now coming out of its shell.  It is from a traditional producer, a vineyard and vintage known for structure.

Antonio Galloni
"The 2001 Barolo Villero offers an attractive, perfumed nose of roses and spices followed by very sweet red fruit, with a soft, round personality and great length. Mascarello is among the last to harvest, and it shows in the super-ripe quality of the fruit here. Villero is also the first of these Barolos to usually reach maturity."
