Winter French Direct Import Sale

We have touted the benefits of our "direct import" buying.  We get the best pricing available, eliminating some of the middle tiers.  And we are able to get things not otherwise available in the market, including some "library releases".

We just got in a shipment of all new French wines, some rather amazing opportunities.  Several fantastic "cru" Beaujolais, some great older Rhones and Malbec, a Bordeaux & Burgundy bargain, and a Grand Cru 2008 vintage Champagne priced lower than Veuve Clicquot. We hope you will come in and check them out, but quantities are very limited.

COME TASTE FOUR OF THEM!

Saturday - Feb 14
3-5 p.m.

RHONE

2013 Mas de Boislauzon "Chaussynette"- $12.99

Made up wholly of declassified Chateauneuf du Pape and Cotes du Rhone Villages fruit from the extremely highly regarded Mas de Boislauzon estate. Deep colour, garnet/ruby  Sweet, ripe, dark fruits on the nose.  60/40 Grenache/Syrah, what a drinkable "bistro red"!

2007 Ch. Fortia Chateuneuf-du-Pape (in magnum) - $75

Really a remarkable opportunity to buy a big bottle from a very good producer, and with some bottle age!  Expressive, with depth yet elegance.   92 points Stephen Tanzer's IWC: "Bright red. Bright raspberry, cherry and floral aromas are complemented by garrigue and wilted rose. Lively, finely etched red fruit flavors show a subtly spicy peppery quality and no rough edges. Impressively pure and energetic wine with strong finishing cut and lingering sweetness."   Think DINNER PARTY!

2000 Domaine Du Chateau Vieux Saint Joseph "Old Vines"- $26.99

Serious Syrah with 15 years now of bottle age, from old-vines vineyards in the Northern Rhone and a bargain. What a find!  Get out the lamb chops!  And a very reasonable price for what this is.

2011 Michel Gassier "Nostre Pais"- $16.99

Deal City.  From the Costieres de Nimes, a blend of Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre and Cinsault.  Asian spices and incense; it is BIG with lots of body and dark fruits, opaque.

RP92 / RR 92-94

2012 Fontaine du Clos Vacqueyras "Reflets de L'âme" - $19.99

You do not often find REALLY GOOD Vacqueyras for under $20.  Mostly Grenache.  FOrward fruit, with tapenade, garrigue and great refinement for the price.

SANCERRE (LOIRE)

2013 Andre Neveu "Fricambault"- $22.99

Passion fruit, cantaloup, peach pit, seashell and lots of mineral. Zero green. Light to medium bodied, pronounced acid that mellows with time, lithe, clean, mineral, and fresh. Very, very, dangerously drinkable. Not complex but absolutely Sancerre.  Good with oysters?

2013 Andre Neveu "Les Longues Fins"- $25.99

From a chalk-white, highly fossiliferous Kimmeridgian site just behind Neveu's Chavignol press house, Longues Fins delivers an oily, smoky, crushed stone aromatic melange all of which one often associates with this sort of soil (in Chablis, too).  You get a special snigle vineyard, racy & energetic Sancerre!

BURGUNDY

2009 Pelletier-Hibon Givry "Vielles Vignes" - $24.99

Great value Burgundy from the under-rated Givry appellation in the Cote Chalnonaise  (known for values). Here we have the last the of the great riper style 2009 vintage.  Pure, complex, dark fruits, excellent bang-for-buck from a small family winery!

CHAMPAGNE

2008 Michel Genet "Millesimé"- $45!

From Chouilly, his basic bottling's are fantastic and usually cost about this price. Here you have 2008 vintage that sees extra aging time.  Millesimé means best vintage, and is usually reserved for the top bottlings. This one is from Grand Cru vineyards...  a stunning bargain in Champagne,  a very rich blanc de blancs, indeed.  And try finding it!  Lower in price than Veuve Clicquot, folks!!

CRU BEAUJOLAIS

2013 Domaine Rochette Morgan "Cotes du Py" - $22.99

Rich, sexy Gamay that sees some wood, and is more tannic and age-worthy.  Morgan is a personal favorite "cru", and the single-vineyard hillside "Cotes du Py" is fantastic site.   These gain nice complexities with time in bottle.

2010 Domaine Rampaux Morgan "Douby" - $23.99

The vineyard site has let us to crack jokes about what is now legal in CO, the famous rock band band the 70's, and even Shakespeare's "douby, or not douby" prose.  But make no mistakes, this is outstanding cru Gamay...  heady minerality, ripe black currant, damson preserves and espresso bean, with a subtle hint of tarry smoke.  Appealing.

2013 Domaine Rochette "CÔTE de BROUILLY" - Sale $19.99

These also age well and have depth.  The schist and siliceous clay produces a wine very mineral and floral (iris, peony) with great finesse and typicity.

2013 Domaine des Chers Juliennas "Old Vines" - $17.99

Sold out before, it's back. Bright purple.  Fresh dark berry and cherry scents are complemented by candied flowers and succulent herbs.  Juicy and incisive in the mouth, offering mineral-tinged black raspberry and cherry flavors that become sweeter with air.  Closes on a suave floral note, with very good energy and length.

 BORDEAUX

2013 Chateau Guiraud " Le G" Bordeaux Blanc - $21.99

From a 15 ha plot planted with 70% Sauvignon and 30% Sémillon, this is fermented in Sauternes barrels "d'un vin" and aged on the fine lees for 7 months with regular batonnage. The result is a clean and precise wine, with the freshness and explosive aromas of the Sauvignon Blanc (passionfruit, grass, box tree) tempered by the ripe lemon fruit from the Sémillon; the batonnage provides a creamy texture and the spicy oak rounds things off nicely; lovely flavours and length. Well done!

2012 Chateau Couronneau - $19.99

As good a $20 Bordeaux rouge as you will find anywhere.  Lush, juicy Merlot with forest floor and hints of earth.

CAHORS

1989 Chateau Cayrou (in magnum) - $75

I've saved the BEST FOR LAST.  You've had Argentina Malbecs, but probably not often French ones from Cahors, the only AOC in France where Malbec is "king".  This producer is known for it age-able wines, and the importer told me I had to try this.  It is surprisingly youthful and drinking very well.  What an amazing opportunity to try an older Malbec in a big bottle for such a reasonable price!

JURA

Chateau d'Arlay Macvin Blanc (375ml) - $22.99

A post-script, for dessert.  Wines from the Jura are unusual and totally unique (we also have the dry Chardonnay from this producer and LOVE it!).   Here is a regional delight.  Macvins can be rouge or blanc.  This one is Chardonnay and Savignin, and the wine is blended with a liqueur.  It is most amazing, and like nothing else you've ever had.  A City Wine feature!
