Dear

BORDEAUX!!

Inspired by our successful Bordeaux class this last week, we picked up some great deals.  Two whites, 3 Sauternes, and 5 reds.  Unfortunately there are tiny quantities of a few of them.  We have a nice selection of good-drinking new Bordeaux for under $15.  Must. Come. See.

COME CONGRATULATE ROBERT ON ACHIEVING HIS SOMMELIER CERTIFICATION!!

PLEASE VOTE FOR CITYWINE ON THE ALIST (recall we came in #1 among wine retail stores last year).

BLANC

2010 CHATEAU DE FRANCE   -    $24.99 (Reg. $50)

Here is fully-mature-barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc from the great Pessac-Léognan in the northern part of Graves.   20% Semillon in this blend.  It really opens up.  Maybe a "Chardonnay drinker's Sauvignon" since it has a richness, some nuttiness from the barrel aging and also the bottle age.  It is very classic white Bordeaux in this style, which is meant to age.    In major contrast to the next wine...

2012 CHATEAU ARGEDANS   -   $14.99

This wine is in our "top 20" list also. Just fresh young unoaked Sauvignon Blanc that after a bit of air smells like a massive honeysuckle in full flower! (so says Robert at our Bordeaux tasting). Low production of blanc from this Sichel producer, and a great value.

ROUGE

2010 CH. DU TERTRE (Margaux)   -   $45  (Reg. $70)

Great classic Bordeaux from Margaux. It has 92 points from Tanzer, Spectator, Enthusiast and Parker-how is that for consistency?  More importantly, Kirk likes it, and "might" let you have a bottle if you are nice to him. Mostly cabernet, and a great vintage from this left-bank producer, but less than a case available.

2010 CH. LANESSAN (Haut-Médoc)   -   $20   (Reg. $30)

Bargain City here.   Absolutely superb value.

92 points James Suckling:  "Aromas of currants, plums, and minerals follow through full body, with chewy tannins and a chewy finish.  Serious depth to this wine."  Can drink or hold another few years.

2008 CH. HAUT-MEDOC DE GISCOURS  -  $24.99 (Reg $40)

Giscours is known for its elegance and expression. Boasting a fine garnet robe and strong notes of cassis and sturdy spices, the texture is clean and energetic. With intensity and balance, it is a stunning addition to a cellar, but drinking really fine now - especially with an earthy roast, juicy filet and gamey lamb with herbs. This is a second wine from Ch. Giscours.

2010 CHATEAU CORBIN -   $39.99 (Reg $65)

Been to this winery. Big fan and what the winemaker/owner is doing at this "Grand Cru Classe". Both of these vintages are top-notch. Merlot/Cab Franc.  Jump on it while you can. James Suckling 93pts "Nose starts with fresh brewed coffee, cedar and chocolate toffee. With a bit of air it shows ripe plum, sweet licorice and fresh leather. Wonderful dark round fruit on the palate with velvety caressing tannins. Full with a long finish with lots of dark fruit." ( Less than one case available, but a few bottles of 2009 too for $50 )

2010 CH. BEAUSÉJOUR MONTAGNE-ST. EMILION "PENTIMENTO"   -  $24.99 (pre-arrival price)

Crafted by winemaker Michele D'Aprix, a protégé of the legendary Stéphane Derenoncourt, this Right Bank wine is driven by Merlot, with 25% Cabernet Franc to provide lift and aromatics. Soft tannins and structured, dark fruit suggestive of black cherry and currant. Delicious to sip on its own, or paired with grass-fed beef. You can practically feel Saint-Émilion's unique soil beneath your feet.

SAUTERNE

2011 CLOS DADY .375  -  $19.99   (Reg $32)

We made a great buy in Sauterne, and when you have it after dinner (or with certain foods) you will ask yourself why you never think to open one up. All the right things--lime, acacia, apricots, grilled almond and honeyed aromas. The palate is luscious and generous with its sweet apricot, honey, roasted nut and marmalade flavours and perfectly balanced with a zesty, lime rind acidity, finishing clean, uplifted and satisfying.  90pts and a Bronze medal from Decanter. Get out the bleu cheese or foie gras!

2003 D'ARCHE .750   -   $55 (only 6 bottles in stock)

Cru Classe 2er.  Gorgeous mature amber color. You have not had Sauterne until you've had one with some age. Delightfully viscous with a nose of petrol and almond, these characteristics carry forward to the palate and mix with orange, toffee and Turkish apricot. Nicely layered, the finish is pure, sumptuous almond paste. Acidity still very much intact!

2005 DE MALLE .750   -   $70 (only 6 bottles in stock)

Another Cru Classe (2er) and from a great structured vintage, 2005. Tropical fruit and a nutty characteristic. An elegant example of Sauternes, with structure to age many years, and still showing a lighter golden hue. The chateau (formerly owned by the proprietors of Yquem) goes back to the 17th century.
