Rosé Part II:
 Tavel, Bandol, N. Rhone

The pink stuff from Bandol and Tavel are generally released later in the season.  In case you have not gotten on-board with rosé wines yet this summer, now would be a good time.  Bandol is known for its beauty and also the Mourvèdre grape that produces structure, age-worthy rosé .  Tavel is the only AOC in France dedicated only to rose' wine.

ALL OF THESE ARE VERY LIMITED IN SUPPLY

2013 Ch. Val d'Arenc Bandol

If you like Bandol, you know that they are pricey and sometimes hard to get.  Here is an example that is quite affordable.  80% Mourvèdre and 20%  Grenache. 100% estate fruit grown to produce Rose.  Planted separately so it can be picked 3-6 days earlier to create great acidity. Average age of vines is 80 years with some Mourvèdre that is 120 years old. Aged in stainless tanks.

2013 Moulin-la-Viguerie Tavel

Tremendous bargain in Tavel (they can easily cost $20+). Light, orange-tinged red.  Displays aromas of dried cherry, raspberry and pungent herbs, with a peppery topnote.  Juicy red fruit flavors show good concentration and breadth, with a hint of bitter cherry pit adding back-end grip.  Closes on a subtle floral note, with good focus and length.

2013 Chateau Pradeaux Bandol

There is the appellation of Bandol with its plethora of producers, some good, some mediocre; and then there is Chateau Pradeaux, the unique, inimitable, standard bearer for this ancient wine-growing district. Pradeaux is situated on the outskirts of the town of St. Cyr Sur Mer, which lies directly on the Mediterranean between Toulon and Marseilles. The estate is owned by the Portalis family who owned this property since before the French Revolution. The domaine is currently under the direction of Cyrille Portalis, who continues to maintain the great traditions of this estate. Although the major part of the vineyards are planted to Mourvedre, the Château Pradeaux Bandol Rosé is composed of Cinsault and Grenache as well as Mourvedre. After a short maceration on the skins, in order to extract a light color, the juice is fermented at low temperatures to retain freshness, fruit and bouquet. After being aged in stainless steel cuves, the wine is normally bottled in May or June of the year following the harvest. It is one of the richest of the rosés of France; dry but full-bodied with a floral bouquet. It is a very limited production wine as most of the production at Château Pradeaux is used to make the formidable Bandol Rouge.
