Dear

March is Rollin'!

What's new and exciting at City Wine this week?  See below, and be sure to check out all the links we've included... Enjoy!

2013 MIRAVAL ROSE - $24.99

You have undoubtedly heard about the wine from "Brangelena":  Angela Jolie & Brad Pitt.   Well, it did make the Spectator "top 100" last year, and has been touted as "mouth-watering".  There is not much of it, and it is sure to be sold out very quickly.  Decanter Article

We bought this, not because it is a "celebrity wine", but because it is GOOD wine.  Miraval is made by the Perrin's (Château de Beaucastel).

2011 COTO DE HAYAS GARNACHA CENTENARIA - $16.99

Here is a candidate for "best wines under $20":

91 points Wine Spectator
: "[$21 list]
"This fleshy red delivers a rich core of blackberry and blueberry compote, accented by toasty vanilla, sweet licorice and cinnamon spice. Well-integrated tannins give this backbone. A bold, modern style. Drink now through 2017. (4/30/13)"

2012 CASA CONTINI VERSO ROSSO SALENTO - $13.99

I had dinner the other night at a great Sicilian-influenced restaurant called "Odyssey".  They had this wine BTG that night.  I liked it so much that I had 2 glasses.  The wine absolutely belies the price point...  it will make you think "Amarone".  In fact, the wine is Negroamaro and Primitivo blend, and there is "apassimento" method involved (drying out the grapes for intensity).  Only 1500 cases made.  Highly recommended, if you like big, fruit-driven wine.  Delicious!!!

2006 CH. LASSEGUE (St. Emilion)- $49.99 / $275 (6-in-wood crate)

What a find.  This "grand cru" was released at $120.  The most recent wine.com price was $80.  Here we have an "older vintage" from a superb producer.  This wine is 60% Merlot, 35% Cab Franc, and 5% Cab Sauvignon.  It is harmonious, still a bit tight when opened, but you will get berry jam, roasted coffee and savory tannins.  Here is what Steve Tanzer has to say about it:

($120) Good deep red-ruby. Black cherry, dark berries, minerals, cola and sexy oak on the nose; became more perfumed with aeration. Sweet and fine-grained, but with solid underlying spine to its dark fruit, spice and cola flavors. Thanks to its impression of lushness without weight, this is the most refined wine yet from this property90 points

Also, it comes in a 6-pack in nice wood crate.   Drink one tonight, and cellar the rest for best rewards.

2008 BEACON HILL ESTATE CHARDONNAY - $12.99 (reg $30)

We still have a few cases of this find!  A true gem here, in high-quality Willamette Valley Chardonnay, that was originally selling for over $30.   After one taste, we  "bought it all"  so we could pass it on to you.   Beacon Hill is a biodynamic (ultra-natural farming) estate which at one time was part of Soter.  Their "unfined & unfiltered" Chardonnay has a leesy, Burgundian richness.  Bosc pear lime blossom:  the focus is on the fruit!  The vintage (2008) has a few years of bottle-age, and is showing well...  Still has acidity, and the French oak is fully integrated.  Try a bottle, you will want a case.

Luis Cañas 2006 Reserva Selección de la Familia - $29.99 (reg $45)

These come in 6-pack wooden crates.  Expressive, modern Rioja.   "EDITORS CHOICE"  Black-fruit aromas come with all the savory, smoky, coconutty accents one could ask for. In the mouth, expect saturation, big tannins, structure galore and layering. Flavors of balsamic black fruits, prune, toast and char finish long, minty, dark and delicious.
94pts / 5-stars DECANTER

Wines from R. Lopez de Heredia (VERY LIMITED!)

Perhaps our favorite "old world" Rioja producer.  These wines are now allocated and can be quite difficult to obtain.  A few of these would make for a most-interesting wine tasting.

Only a few bottles are available, especially of the whites.

1998 Tondonia Reserva White

2004 Gravonia Crianza White
2001 Tondonia Rouge
2003 Bosconia
2005 Cubillo

Lastly, are you a fan of Domaine Serene  "Evenstad" Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley?  $65 wine.  If you are interested in
this at under $35, see us!!

"Real Wine...   Real Wine Store"

Most of our customers are "wine people", but on occasion, an interesting "craft beer" is fun.  We have a few new things in this area, including the "Brainless on Peaches" Belgian-style Ale from EPIC BREWING downtown.

Fruit and yeast (not much hop).  This is made with peaches (they are pretty much subtle), and also aged in French Chardonnay barrels!   Quite the rage...   $12.99
