"Winter Whites"


It's winter.  Conventional wisdom tells us that we should be swirling big, hearty reds around in our stems. When the down parkas and scarfs come out - only a robust red can warm our insides, right? Not so fast... See, while most of us have been taught to drink "seasonally" - meaning reds in winter, and crisp, zingy whites in summer.  Yet, there is an abundance of substantial white wine with full-bodied textures and rich, round flavors that are perfect for cold-weather meals and entertaining.

And to help make the case, who better than a certified "master" Sommelier? We have a rare treat to taste with Doug Krenik, one of only 197 Master Somms in the world!

  •  Mure Pinot Gris, Alsace - classic Alsace PG - apricot, peach and pear with a silky, fresh texture
 
  • Dr Loosen Red Slate Trocken Riesling - from Urzig and Erden, Spatlese-level Riesling fermented dry

 

  • Fattoria Monticino Rosso Condronchio, Albana di Romana - botrytis-infected - pretty heady stuff that goes with an amazing array of foods

 

  • Le Capitaine Sparkling Vouvray - 100% Chenin Blanc from a small, family-owned producer specializing in sparkling.  Bubbles are winter's best friend.

 

 

    

Doug Krenik is a Master Sommelier for the Summit Division of Beverage Distributors in Colorado. Over the past twenty-five years, Doug has been associated with almost every aspect of the wine business; importing his own wines, working for national importers and local distributors in both sales and education, and directing the wine program of the prestigious Flagstaff House Restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. He completed the rigorous Master Sommelier Diploma Exam in February 2006. Doug is also a Certified Wine Educator (CWE) through the Society of Wine Educators and a Certified Cicerone through the Cicerone Certification Program.

 

Doug currently lives in Colorado with his wife Chris and enjoys cooking, writing, cycling and playing guitar.
