2001 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva Rioja

The 2001 Vina Tondonia Reserva is bridled with a lovely nose of decayed red fruit, fireside hearth, a touch of mulberry and small red cherry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp red fruits (wild strawberry and cranberry) with a sharp, vibrant, tense, tannic finish that has immense precision. There is a slight saline note lingering in the mouth after the wine has (regretfully) departed. Drink now-2030+    RP95

$50

2003 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia Reserva Rioja

80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo:  Medium red.  Ripe red fruit, flowers and spices on the nose, with a smoky nuance emerging with aeration; very fresh for this notoriously hot vintage.  Concentrated but not at all heavy, with intense red berry and floral pastille flavors and a deeper note of singed plum.  The finish is bright and high-pitched, with lingering cherry and raspberry flavors and a hint of candied licorice.  ST92/RP92

$40

2005 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo Crianza Rioja

65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo:  Deep red.  Highly perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry and baking spices, plus a hint of mocha.  Sappy and seamless in texture, with very good depth and clarity to its spicy red fruit flavors.  Fine-grained tannins come on late and add shape to the long, penetrating, spice-dominated finish.  Pretty tasty right now but this elegant wine's balance bodes well for aging.  ST91/RP91

$30

2009 Baronia del Montsant Flor d'Englora Roure

The 2009 Flor d'Englora Roure is a blend of 63% Garnacha, 32% Carinena, and the balance Syrah, Merlot and Tempranillo aged in 25% new barriques (the first oak treatment for this cuvee). Dark ruby-colored, it exhibits a bouquet of smoke, mineral, espresso, Asian spices, black cherry, and plum. Savory, ripe, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated, it is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 5-6 years. RP90

2005 Uncastellum Aureum Organic

Saturated purple in color, it reluctantly surrenders aromas of earth, mineral, espresso, Asian spices, black cherry, and black currant. Dense, rich, and with excellent volume on the palate, this full-flavored offering will continue to blossom for another 2-3 years and have a drinking window extending from 2012 to 2020. Uncastellum is an organically certified producer functioning at a high level as these offerings attest. A SELLOUT LAST FALL! RP90

It should continue to do so for up to a decade. These are sensational values from the highly renowned appellation of Ribera del Duero. RP93/ ST91
