2010 SEA MIST RRV CHARDONNAY (CA) From the top Russian River Valley area, this is a steal. Appealing nose of flowers and honeysuckle. 2011 DOMAINE ST. JACQUES D'ALBAS (France) |
One of the best-value reds tasted from the Minervois in a while. A lovely blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, this is a forward open style designed for earlier drinking with appealing spiced plum fruit flavours. Gentle round tannins provide good depth on the finish.
AFFINITY: Grilled Meats or Portabello, depending on your orientation ;)
|
2009 DAMALISCO TORO ROBLE (Spain)
Talking about "over-deliver". 100% Tempranillo from the great Toro region. A Decanter award-winner, this has a peppery/mineral nose that opens up, and a full, generous amount of sweet fruit. Sings with some air. Wonderful QPR.
AFFINITY: Loin Lamb Chops, yum
|

2009 CANTELE SALICE SALENTINO
(Italy)
Gambero Rosso "3 Bicchieri" (3 Glasses) winner AND their pick for the Best Value Wine of 2013. Cherries, herbs, smoke, what's not to like? 100% Negroamaro - a common, thick-skinned varietal grown throughout Puglia.
AFFINITY: Grilled Sausages would work

2011 Tilia Merlot (Chile)
OK, it's tacky that the Robert Parker "91" rating is splattered all over the place (show-offs!), but I got over it because the wine TASTES SO GOOD. Here is what the man says: "The 2011 Tilia Merlot undergoes a 20-day skin maceration and is aged in oak for six to nine months. It has a lovely nose, one of the best I have found for this varietal, with vibrant dark cherry, black plum and mineral notes. The palate is well-balanced with fine tannins. It is very pure, with crisp dark plum, tar and a savory edge on the finish. This is how Argentinean Merlot should be done. Superb."
AFFINITY: Grilled Chicken and Veggie Kabobs
|

2012 ABRAZO GARNACHA (Spain)
A dry and soft cherry colored red wine. The bouquet is reminiscent of black cherry's, raspberry, with hints of truffles. The balancing acid gives the wine a good structure and a long finish. Fresh and quaffable, and a gold medal winner in LA.
AFFINITY: Pizza, Burgers, all-of-that-stuff
