THE WINES
The Scholium Project
Esquire Magazine published The Brightest: 16 Geniuses who Give Us Hope, featuring "renegade" Abe Schoener, mastermind of the Scholium Project. The winery is "rooted in the philosophical belief that only by experimenting at the precipice of disaster can we challenge our understanding of what wines can be - and create new ones. So while most of the wine industry sits on its hands, constrained by orthodoxy and the bottom line, Schoener, forty-nine, explores the outer limits of each wine's microbiological potential." Also see the recent piece in the New York Times. We will taste the 2010 Midan Al-Tahrir and sell it for $18.
(a complex and funky blend of Verdelho, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Gewürtztraminer)
Arnot-Roberts
Another US winery doing innovative things, both wine-making techniques and varietals being explored. The SF Chronicle just named them
We are choosing to taste and offer the 2011 North Coast Syrah (only $25). This wine has several unique properties, including the use of 100% uncrushed whole cluster fruit and native yeasts. It is only 12.5% alcohol, and comes from very cool climate vineyards. The wine-maker uses dry ice to keep the fermentation in check. A very different kind of Syrah, especially for California.
Radikon
Stanko Radikon has been called a "maverick in the land of mavericks". He is one individualistic winemaker in the town of Oslavia, on a relatively tiny stretch of hills north of the border town of Gorizia in the Isonzo zone of Friuli. His "Slatnik" (Chardonnay, Friulano) sees no added sulfites. It is dense, cloudy, tannic, salty. It sees over 3 weeks of maceration, some skin contact for the "orange" color. Unique and Legendary. Steve Tanzer says, "Although the winemaking technique might seem new and radical, it actually represents a return to a method used long ago by the ancient Romans." Click for an interesting interview with StankoWe will taste the 2010 Radikon "Slatnik" and offer it for only $39 (limited ).

I first heard The Chapman Stick® played by bassist Alphonso Johnson on an early Weather Report album. It caught my attention as one of the most unique and amazing sounds I'd ever heard. We are fortunate to have Steve Hahn showing us what this 10-stringed instrument can do: bass, melody, harmony all rolled into one. It sounds like "two guitars and a bass". Steve excels with multiple instruments and styles, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. He received a National Endowment (NEA) grant to study Stick and did extensive study with Alphonso Johnson. His albums include Stickburst (1994); Native American Music Meets The Chapman Stick (1998); and "sh", also released in 1998. You Gotta see this!
