Dear
We are in "full swing" here at City Wine. Decorations are up. "Santa Maz" will appear in the store wearing his "Santa Hat" on Sundays (2-5), disgorging holiday cheer, and... we are over-flowing with wines and other cool stuff.
After exploring Germany, the Rhone and Spain, we decided to give Italy some attention. We will be tasting some stunning higher-end wines from Barberesco, Barolo and Offida this Saturday. You will not want to miss this reprise of "Italian Heavyweights".
SILVIO GIAMELLO
Giamello remains the the archetypal artisanal estate with very small quantities produced entirely by the family for four generations. All vineyard work is natural and chemical free with purely traditional vinification.
2009 Barbaresco Vicenziana $39.99 reg $59.99
Exceptionally beautiful and polished.
Crushed flowers and deep spices are intricately woven into a seamless finish
2011 Langhe Nebbiolo "Gentiana" $18.99 reg $24.99 From the same vineyard as the Barbaresco and could be classified as such but Silvio keeps this plot separate based on his tasting. Upfront and softer than the Barbaresco bottling. Delicious now.
GUIDO PORRO
The limestone-heavy soils of Serralunga d'Alba are known for providing the most long-lived and full-bodied Barolos. Porro's vineyards are located here in
the Lazzarito cru, a gorgeous amphitheatre that faces south-southwest and offers the grapes full sun exposure and protection from the wind.
2008 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco $39.99 reg $59.99
"crushed flowers, mint, licorice, and spice, hauntingly beautiful"
94+ pts Wine Advocate
2010 Dolcetto d' Alba Vigna l' Pari
$15.99 reg $19.99
From a producer of this stature you know what he can do with a little wine like this, he "elevates" it to a level above. Finest Dolcetto value we know of.
RIOFAVARA
Riofavara is located in the Noto Valley of Sicily just a few minutes down the road from the town that gave Nero d'Avola its name, and was the first producer to dignify this grape with the use of its own indigenous yeasts. Estates like Riofavara are eliciting vivacious, mineral wines from the zone's rocky limestone and marl terrains.
2010 Spaccaforno "Eloro" $16.99 reg $22.99The warmth of Sicily comes through in the generous, balanced spicy red. Six months in French oak adds depth. Let your imagination run wild with food pairings.
SESTI
This producer, located in Montalcino continues to produce the "sexiest" Sangiovese we know of, their farming methods are hyper organic and attention to detail is second to none.
2009 Monteleccio IGT $19.99 reg $24.99 Elegant without weight, dances across your palate with intriguing flavors of cedar, spice and earth.
2009 Rosso di Montalcino $29.99 reg $39.99 "Baby Brunello" Has the full bodied depth of a wine much more expensive. Highly recommended.
SANT' ELENA Ensconced in Friuli, Italy way up in the northeast corner
1998 Ros di Rol $14.99 reg $30
A blend of Cabernet and Merlot aged in small barrels. All the aging in done for you and then the price cut in half! Classic old world cachet, forest floor, mineral and smoke. Last call!

2010 Lo Speciale Bianco $29.99 "gorgeous,I am quite taken by the textured expression of the fruit, aromatics and overall balance"
91pts Wine Advocate
2010 Friulano $29.99
"crushed pears, peaches, a weightless expression to the fruit that is especially striking"
90pts Wine Advocate
