Development of Core Competencies Vital
to Future Business Growth in the US
Executives and Managers Say Many Workers Need Significant Improvement in "Four Cs" Skills
According to a new survey conducted by American Management Association (AMA), more than half of US executives say many of their employees need to significantly improve their "four Cs," or core competencies: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Executives and managers say they need a workforce equipped with skills beyond the basics of reading, writing and math if their organizations are to remain competitive globally in the 21st century.
The Critical Skills Survey, conducted in December, 2012, queried 768 executives and managers about the importance of critical thinking, communication skills, collaboration and creativity to their organizations. Learn more
On-site Training Offers the Biggest Bang for Your Employee Skill-Building Buck
While today's organizations have several options for their employee skill-building initiatives, including public courses and online self-directed programs, on-site, instructor-led training has consistently proven to offer a significantly higher rate of return on the training investment of most organizations.
The cost-saving aspects of on-site training are among the most important benefits for many organizations. The fees to bring instructors and programs to the workplace are typically lower than the cost of enrolling employees in outside training courses, which often entail travel and additional time away from work. In addition, flexibility of format and scheduling of on-site programs can better accommodate workflow requirements and reduce lost work time. Courses can be scheduled on weekdays, weeknights or weekends, and delivered in half-day modules or concentrated into full day or multi-day programs, resulting in reduced work disruption. Learn more
Accident Investigations Help Safeguard Employees and Protect Organizations
Thousands of workplace accidents occur in the US every day, usually caused by the failure of people, equipment, supplies, or surroundings to behave or react as expected. Accident investigations determine not only what happened, but also how and why. By using the information gained through an investigation, a similar or perhaps more serious accident may be prevented.
Though accident investigations can be a valuable tool for prevention and compliance, many employers have not established comprehensive accident investigation policies. An effective investigation program can help safeguard employees from future accidents and help protect employers from potential legal liability. The key reasons to conduct a workplace accident investigation include:
  • To determine the cause of accidents and prevent future accidents
  • To fulfill any legal requirements
  • To determine the cost of an accident
  • To determine compliance with applicable safety regulations
  • To process workers' compensation claims

"What really makes the difference is the ability to demonstrate what are now widely referred to as key skills such as working as a member of a team, communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving and planning, and taking responsibility for our learning and development. These are the skills that differentiate good from great."
