Baker College Appoints New President
Bart Daig, Ph.D. was named president of Baker College System, taking over for F. James Cummins, who retired as president after nearly 30 years with the school. Daig, who has been with Baker for 25 years, previously led Baker College Online/Center for Graduate Studies and then moved into the position of chief operating officer before taking over as president. Cummins joined Baker in 1986 as System vice president for finance. Jill Langan, Ph.D. is the new president of Baker College Online/Center for Graduate Studies. She has been with Baker for 17 years.
In other school news, Baker College of Clinton Township continues to enroll students for the 2016 winter quarter with on-ground classes beginning Mon., Jan. 11. Online classes begin Jan. 7. Registration for on-ground courses continues through the first week of classes.
Grant Awarded to Anton Art Center
Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan's Detroit Auto Dealers Association Charitable Foundation Fund. This grant will be used to implement Arts Educational Programming in cooperation with Mount Clemens Community School District, providing participatory arts experiences and artist residencies for the students in their district.
In other news, the Anton Art Center Galleries and Gift Shop are temporarily closed. The Galleries will reopen Jan. 16 (second floor) and Jan. 29 (first floor).
Macomb County Home of State's Safest Cities
 Five Macomb County communities landed on a list of Michigan's 15 safest cities with a population of 50,000+. They are: Macomb Township (2), Shelby Township (4), Sterling Heights (6), St. Clair Shores (8) and Clinton Township (15). The report, compiled by Michigan-based data aggregator Munetrix, used data from the US Census Bureau and Michigan State Police.
Walsh College Names Commencement Speaker
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan President and CEO Daniel J. Loepp will be the keynote speaker at Walsh College's 106th Commencement on Sat., Jan. 23. Walsh College will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon Loepp. BCBSM has also been named one of America's Top Organizations for Multi-Cultural Business Opportunities by DiversityBusiness.com and ranked five consecutive years as one of the top 10 Regional Companies for diversity by Diversity Inc. magazine, including being ranked #1 for 2015.
