Zoo Wins Awards
The Detroit Zoological Society received the coveted Green Award from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) for best sustainable business practices. The award recognizes green programs that reduce the environmental impact of an organization from a business operations standpoint.  The zoo no longer sells bottled water and is building Michigan's first dry biodigester, which will compost animal and organic food waste while capturing the methane to be used as a renewable energy source to help power the Zoo's animal hospital.  The zoo has also invested $3 million into energy efficient projects throughout the grounds. These fall under the umbrella of the Zoo's Greenprint.

The Zoo was also recognized by the AZA with the 2015 Angela Peterson Excellence in Diversity Award for the Inclusive Experience.  The zoo was recognized for its efforts to accommodate diverse experiences by offering accommodations for zoo guests with autism.  An online visual guide for those with autism was created in collaboration with the Autism Alliance of Michigan.  The guide helps set expectations for animal habitats, rides, attractions and other zoo experiences.
