SAFE Co-sponsors Pilot Proficiency Demonstration

Month-long Effort Features Webinars, Simulator Scenario

The NTSB has put loss of control on its general aviation "Most Wanted" list for 2015. In response, the Mindstar Aviation Community will debut a unique, month-long, Pilot Proficiency Demonstration beginning on Wednesday, March 25. SAFE is a proud co-sponsor of this important initiative.

The month-long program consists of two parts: two, live and interactive webinars presented weekly; and a simulator scenario available at eight locations in the Washington DC area. SAFE member Rich Stowell will present "Loss of Control and Stall/Spin Awareness" live, every Wednesday, beginning Wednesday, March 25. SAFE member Doug Stewart will present "Preparing for the Unexpected" live, every Thursday, beginning Thursday, March 26. The cost for each webinar topic is $24.95, or $34.95 for both. Registrants can review recordings of the webinars as often as they like afterwards. Eligible participants can earn WINGS credit for the webinars and the simulator session.

The simulator scenario will be available beginning on Wednesday, March 25 at eight select locations throughout the Washington DC area. SAFE members developed the "Shenandoah Sortie" scenario incorporating many of the concepts, tips, and techniques presented in the webinars. The cost for the Shenandoah Sortie is $24.95 plus simulator time (cost for the sim time varies based on location and simulator type). However, if participants complete a post-scenario feedback form, the $24.95 fee for the sortie itself will be refunded.

This demonstration will serve as a test, a proof of concept, for future training utilizing simulators in a networked environment. Based on feedback from simulator participants, this and other scenarios will be made available on a larger scale through the National Capital Area Flight Simulation Network. The long-term objective is not only to expand the simulation network nationwide but also make the scenarios accessible on personal computers.

A comprehensive pilot proficiency program should include academics, the use of flight simulation training devices, and hands-on experience in suitable airplanes. This debut offering from the Mindstar Aviation Community combines academics and flight simulation in a cohesive package that addresses loss of control. Future plans include development of additional training packages that may also incorporate in-airplane lesson plans.

The Pilot Proficiency Demonstration is a cooperative effort between the Mindstar Aviation Community, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE), subject matter experts, and others.
