July 2014

SAFE represents more than 800 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE developed and is now offering Regional Pilot Proficiency Projects across the U.S.

Countdown to AirVenture 2014!

With less than a month to go until opening day of AirVenture 2014, SAFE is gearing up for another exciting week of networking, education, prizes, camaraderie, food, and FUN!

The SAFE tent will be in the same location as last year in the "Education Interactive Zone" , in space 35 on James Ray Boulevard near the intersection with Knapp Street.

The SAFE tent is always a great place to quench one's thirst... not only with a bottle of cold water, but with information about SAFE advocacy efforts, member benefits, and other aviation education news. In the tent this year we will have a Teacher's Corner featuring the "Edustation", a simulator designed specifically for K-12 teachers and STEM coordinators to introduce young learners to STEM topics using aviation as the motivator.

The annual SAFE member's meeting and dinner, sponsored by AOPA, Starr Aviation and Aviation Insurance Resources, will be held on Thursday, July 31 at 1800, in the Wittman Regional Airport Terminal located at  525 West 20th Avenue, on the north side of the airport. As in years past, the dinner will be a delicious buffet, with beer, wine and soft drinks available. We will also be holding a door prize raffle with some fantastic prizes, including a Bose A20 headset and a Lightspeed Zulu2 headset. We will also be announcing the winners of the "Each One Bring One" campaign during the dinner. (If you haven't already recruited one new member to SAFE there's still time...)  If you would like to attend, please register here

AirVenture is also an excellent place for you to volunteer some of your time for SAFE by helping staff our tent. If you would like to volunteer a morning, afternoon, full day, or more of your time and talent... please sign up now.  Volunteering at the SAFE tent is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with old friends, to network with other members of the aviation education community, to mentor visitors to the tent seeking information, and a chance to learn as well. We'd love to have you helping us in the tent!

Regardless of whether it's in the SAFE tent, at the dinner, on the flight line, in a seminar forum, or anywhere else on the grounds of AirVenture, we look forward to seeing you in OSH!!

One Month Left for "Each One Get One!"

With just one month left until the end of the "Each One Get One" membership campaign, there is still time for you to get entered in the drawing for: a Bose A20 headset; a SP-400 Sporty's handheld transceiver; a $400 gift certificate from King Schools. All you need to do is recruit one new member to SAFE. For each new member you recruit you will get one entry into the drawing for the prizes and you'll also get a Starbucks gift card. This is a win/win/win situation. You, the member you recruit, and SAFE all come out winners. Please help... do your part!

Comment Period Opens -- Commercial and Instructor Certification Standards

A Notice of Request for Comment was published in the Federal Register on 06/26/2014, seeking comments on the newly proposed Airman Certification Standards for the Commercial Pilot Certificate and the Authorized Instructor Certificate. The comment period extends for 60 days, closing on 08/25/2014.

This notice announces the availability of draft Airman Certification Standards documents developed by the Airman Certification Standards Working Group (nine SAFE members are participating in the ACSWG) for the commercial pilot certificate and the authorized instructor certificate. The Airman Certification Standards documents are designed as the foundation for transitioning to a more integrated and systematic approach to airman certification testing and training. Given their importance in the ongoing evolution of the FAA's airman certification testing and training system, the Airman Certification Standards Working Group wishes to make the draft Airman Certification Standards for the commercial pilot certificate and the revised Airman Certification Standards for the authorized instructor certificate available to the public for review and comment. The Airman Certification Standards Working Group will use the comments it receives to refine its work on this task. These documents are available for public review, download, and comment here.

Every SAFE member is encouraged to read the entire document and to offer comments and suggestions before the close of the comment period on August 25th, 2014. Many of the comments received for the Private and Instrument Rating ACS were adapted into the final draft that was sent to the FAA for approval. This is YOUR chance to have important input into living documents that will play a major role in shaping the way we teach and test well into the future. These opportunities do not happen all that often, so please READ the documents and submit your comments in a timely fashion.

Send Your Teaching Tips to the Resource Center

Be a resource to your fellow members! The SAFE Resource Center is a place to share instructional materials with our aviation educators. Any member can submit his or her own written documents, PowerPoint presentations, videos and other files to the Resource Center. In particular, we are looking to expand the number of resources covering key topics. These include maintenance, airspace, medicals, aircraft performance, and regulations. Each submission will be reviewed by the Resource Center's Editorial Review Committee and posted in the appropriate section. Visit http://www.safepilots.org/resource-center/member-resource-center to learn more.

Opportunities for SAFE to Aid PEGASAS Research

The Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility, and Sustainability (PEGASAS) is the multi-university team selected in September 2012 by the FAA as the new Air Transportation Center of Excellence (COE) for General Aviation. The team is comprised of Purdue University, Georgia Institute of Technology, The Ohio State University, Florida Institute of Technology, Iowa State University, and Texas A&M University as core members, and 17 affiliate member universities. The FAA's COE program is a cost-sharing research partnership between academia, industry and the federal government. SAFE sits as an industry representative on the PEGASAS Advisory Board.

PEGASAS investigates a broad spectrum of general aviation safety issues, including airport technology, propulsion and structures, airworthiness, flight safety, fire safety, human factors, system safety management and weather. There are two specific ongoing research projects that SAFE has been asked to assist with. One has to do with Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC), and the other with the National General Aviation Flight Information Database  (NGAFID).

WTIC

Researchers at Purdue, Western Michigan, and Kent State Universities are conducting FAA-sponsored research regarding Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC).  The researchers invite General Aviation (GA) pilots who operate under Visual Flight Rules to participate in a research survey to look at the types of meteorological information accessed and used by GA pilots, the procedures for VFR flight, weather avoidance techniques they utilize, and the types of weather-related training they receive.

SAFE educators can play a major role in this study! Please encourage all of your eligible clients to participate in the survey. Eligible participants must be at least 18 years of age and be an active general aviation pilot.  All participants will be required to complete a consent form prior to taking the survey.

The survey can be accessed online at Weather Technology in the Cockpit GA Pilot Survey it is anticipated that the survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. To ensure participant anonymity and confidentiality, no names, identification numbers, or company identification will be collected. Results will be used to better understand GA pilot preparation and decision-making, focused on continued flight under Visual Flight Rules into Instrument Meteorological Conditions, and how they utilize equipment to make safe and timely weather avoidance decisions.

If you are interested in learning more about this survey, please contact Dr. Thomas Carney by email at [email protected] or via telephone at 765-494-9954.

NGAFID

The National General Aviation Flight Information Database (NGAFID) is being developed as a neutral mechanism to collect, archive, analyze, and disseminate de-identified flight data to participants and aviation safety researchers. The system will provide a secure, web-accessible database and analytical toolkit that participating operators will be able to use in order to conduct safety and operational quality analyses on their own flight data records. In addition, the system will allow participating operators to analyze aggregate safety performance.

PEGASAS is working to expand and improve the NGAFID to make it easier to submit data, cover a wider range of aircraft, and to identify trends in safety performance across the US GA fleet. As a GA flight operator, your participation is crucial to the success of the NGAFID, and to the tremendous impact it can have on operational safety and quality assurance. SAFE members are invited to participate in this project by voluntarily sharing flight data with. Participation will allow you to exercise all the analytical capabilities in the NGAFID system so that you may gain additional insight from your data. The envisioned capabilities include established methods and techniques for flight data record analysis, as well as new and innovative approaches developed by researchers as part of this effort. Also, while providing confidentiality, your data will allow the GA community as a whole to examine operational performance and gain insights into current safety practices.

If you are interested in participating, please contact the Principal Investigator at Purdue University: Dr. Karen Marais, [email protected]
