September 2013

SAFE represents more than 700 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE is also leading the Pilot Training Reform Initiative.

Message from the Chairman, John Dorcey

The organization's annual membership meeting held during AirVenture provided an opportunity for SAFE members to meet their board in person.  For many it was the first opportunity they've had to meet their board.  Officers are elected to a 12-month term, and our recent election and the filling of two vacancies have resulted in five new directors joining the board.

The annual board meeting preceded the membership meeting during which officer elections were held.  Jim Anderson was elected treasurer.  Jim is only the second individual to hold this position.  Jack Vandeventer was re-elected to the secretary post -- this will be Jack's second year as secretary.  The vice-chair position is now held by Donna Wilt.  After serving as secretary for two years and last year as vice-chair, I was elected to the chairman's post.

I introduced the new board and officers during a brief presentation.  I also took a few minutes to share my philosophy of how and what the board, what SAFE as an organization, has in front of it for the next 12 months.

Our board will remain a working board.  It will continue to do much of the work typically done by an organization's staff.  This work is in addition to the governance tasks boards are more known for.  Every single board member serves on at least one committee, several serve on three.  Those nine individuals are plenty busy.

As you know SAFE has a part-time executive director.  Doug Stewart is outstanding in his service as SAFE's executive director.  A future article will detail just what it is that Doug does for us.  If you are keeping track, we have nine board members, an executive director.  Jenny Furst is our administrator who does yeoman service: managing new and renewing memberships, keeping the books, answering our phone calls... just to mention a few of the things she does.  A total of 11 folks who work the front lines for SAFE.

We do have additional volunteer help. Today there are 23 SAFE members who support the organization through their efforts on various committees.  Working in the background, with little recognition, they quietly accomplish much.  Other folks lend a hand at the various events where SAFE has an exhibit.  Others still give seminars, serve as mentors, or act as instructors in our Pilot Proficiency Program.  We owe all of these individuals a great deal of thanks.  Actually we owe them more than our thanks.  We owe them a hand.

My philosophy is this;  I am a firm believer that membership in an organization is more than paying dues.  It is participating.  Consider participating in SAFE by sharing your time, your talents, and your treasures.  For some, participation comes only after being asked.  If that is you, I am asking.  I'm asking you for a hand, for your participation in our organization.  Send me an email and I'll respond with several opportunities where you can help make SAFE even better.  Thanks for helping.

Plans Move Forward for Weekend PPP

Plans for the weekend SAFE Pilot Proficiency Project™ (PPP), to be held on Oct. 26 - 27 at Skyport, the Redbird laboratory/flight school/FBO in San Marcos, TX are virtually finalized. The weekend event will include the opportunity for every participant to "fly" a one- hour simulator session. In addition seven seminars will be offered during the weekend on topics ranging from: Single Pilot IFR, iPad Best Practices for Flight Planning, Angle of Attack Awareness, Human Factors in Loss of Control, and more. On Saturday evening there will be a dinner/gathering for SAFE members and guests featuring a discussion on "The Art of Teaching in the Cockpit" moderated by Doug Stewart and Rich Stowell.

This weekend event will be the first in a series of quarterly regional meetings, and if attendance and interest warrants, will be expanded into even more frequent events. It is hoped that by bringing the SAFE Pilot Proficiency Project™ to many different FBOs and Flight Schools around the country, pilots will be introduced to the opportunity to engage in an ongoing program of affordable proficiency training. This will be a win/win for both the pilot community as well as for the facilities able to provide the training.

A website is currently under construction where full details, schedules, fees and the opportunity to pre-register will be available (we will be sending out the URL as soon as the site is live). Current sponsors for the PPP™ include Redbird Flight Simulations, Starr Aviation, Sennheiser Aviation, and AvWeb.

This PPP™ will be held on the weekend immediately preceding the Redbird "Migration," thus giving flight schools and FBOs attending "Migration" the opportunity to witness the PPP™ up close and personal. For anyone flying in to San Marcos fuel will be available at Skyport for the amazing price of $1.00 per gallon.  For more information, please contact Doug Stewart.
