December 2012

SAFE represents nearly 700 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE is also leading the Pilot Training Reform Initiative.

SAFE Resource Center Continues to Expand

The SAFE Resource Center continues to expand, both in the Public section of the center as well as in the Members Only section.

In response to a survey of teachers conducted by SAFE's K-12 Resources Group during AirVenture 2012, an annotated list of online resources was recently added to the Public section specifically for K-12 teachers. The six-page list was vetted by SAFE and is designed to save time for K-12 teachers looking to introduce aviation and aerospace themes into their classrooms. For example, the site www.FlyToLearn.com promotes "S.T.E.M. Education Through Aviation" for students of all ages.  The site also offers software for classroom use that allows students to design, build, and fly virtual airplanes for a few dollars per student per year.  If you know of any sites that you feel should be included in this growing list, please send your suggestions to the Editorial Review Committee for consideration.

The SAFE Members Only section now has available the Powerpoint presentations that were originally developed for the FAASTeam as part of the "Flight Instructor Open Forum" series. These presentations were created to provide an opportunity for all aviation educators and evaluators to join forces in order to standardize and employ best practices during pilot training and testing. As the program has grown, the FAASTeam has given SAFE the authority to offer these presentations to the general aviation pilot community. Thus any SAFE member can now access these "read only" Forums for use in presentations to the general aviation pilot community. As a presenter of these forums, you will have a wonderful opportunity to effect significant changes to improve general aviation safety.

Calling All Innovators
Tim Zuck had watched a number of pilots spill TKS anti-ice fluid while re-filling their airplanes.  So his employer, D.W. Davies, created filler caps for their 1-gallon and 2.5 gallon TKS-Fluid bottles.

Scott Philiben was tired of hearing that fuel gauges in GA aircraft are not trustworthy, so he developed a fuel level sender to rival those found in business jets and airliners.  Now we can trust the fuel gauge.

Meg Godlewski, our staff reporter extraordinaire, SAFE member and Master Certified Flight Instructor, uses plastic snakes and spiders to teach her students to do thorough pre-flights.  If they find three... the job isn't complete.

Do you have an innovative way to do ANYTHING IN AVIATION? If so, send it my way.  I'd love to share it with our readers in the Dec. 21 issue of General Aviation News. (NOTE: original deadline was before we went to "print", but please send your idea in anyway -- Ed.).

Ideally, I'd like to have a photo, if the innovation is photo-worthy, and a short description (100 words) explaining what it is, how it helps, and who to contact if it is being sold.

Ideas are meant to be shared.  What's yours?

Aviation Educator Hall of Fame Granted Tax Exempt Status

The Aviation Educator Hall of Fame (AEHOF) was recently granted 501(c)(3) tax exempt status by the IRS. Begun as a SAFE initiative in 2010, a coalition of more than 20 aviation organizations and individuals formally established the independent Hall of Fame earlier this year. AEHOF is led by President Jack Pelton, Vice President Steve Riethof, and Secretary Judy Phelps. Peggy Chabrian, Rod Machado, Rusty Sachs, and Thomas Turner make up the selection committee.

Currently a virtual Hall of Fame, AEHOF's purpose is to select and recognize qualified nominees who, through extraordinary achievement and service of either a sustained or a one-time nature, have made outstanding contributions to aviation education generally, in a specific field of endeavor, or in a niche. AEHOF's goals for 2013 include inducting its inaugural class of honorees.

Tax deductible donations to AEHOF can be made through the organization's online PayPal "Donate" button, or by check payable to Aviation Educator Hall of Fame, Inc., c/o P.O. Box 1026, McCall, ID 83638. For those wishing to support AEHOF by volunteering time and expertise, please email Info@AviationEducatorHoF.org

For more information, or to nominate a candidate for consideration for the Hall of Fame, visit http://www.AviationEducatorHoF.org

Aviation Educator Accreditation Program -- Now in BETA Release

One of the recommendations from SAFE's Pilot Training Reform Symposium, was to create an early flight instructor accreditation that encourages and recognizes the professional growth of Aviation Educators. An industry-wide committee was formed and tasked with this goal. The committee identified six standards that professional flight instructors and other aviation educators should meet and maintain to be recognized as an accredited aviation educator. These standards are:

  1. Utilize their skills as teachers, educators, instructors and trainers
  2. Continue to enhance these skills by participating in various learning activities
  3. Participate in a mentoring program where they have access to experienced "masters in the trade"
  4. Learn from a recommended reading list compiled by experienced educators
  5. Promote general aviation by participating in general aviation events and venues
  6. Subscribe to the tenets of the Flight Instructor Model Code of Conduct

The Aviation Educator Accreditation committee, chaired by SAFE member and Master Instructor David McVinnie, has devoted the past eighteen months to developing the standards and procedures for this new designation. The group has formulated a process that will encourage and reward professional educators who want to become above average instructors. That process is now ready for BETA testing.

The Committee recognizes that this program, which encourages the professional development of aviation educators with an industry-recognized, voluntary designation with formal recognition, is an evolving process. The time has now come to introduce the program to the aviation community and invite participation in the final formulation of the accreditation process.

To this end, the program is being launched in a BETA test mode, open to individuals and Flight Schools that recognize the value of this effort and wish to participate as "first responders" in this project. No fee will be charged for those applicants who volunteer for this BETA test.

This is a fantastic opportunity for BETA participants to be at the "leading edge" of this important initiative and to become members of the first class of Accredited Aviation Educators. For more information and application forms please visit www.aviationeducators.org.

Pilot Proficiency Project™ Gains Momentum

The SAFE Pilot Proficiency Project™ continues to gain momentum, with the next offering scheduled for the Women In Aviation convention, Nashville, TN March 14-16, 2013. If you are currently providing instruction in a Redbird Simulator please don't hesitate to download all the PPP scenarios and use them with your clients.

SAFE Speakers Bureau for K-12 Audiences

As most pilots are aware, aviation can be a fantastic catalyst to excite and inspire young people to become engaged with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) topics. To that end, SAFE is putting together a speakers bureau of aviation educators who have the willingness, enthusiasm and expertise to speak to audiences comprised of Kindergarten through 12th grade students. This database of speakers will be made available to K-12 teachers nationwide through the SAFE website. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of this exciting new venture, please contact membership committee chair Sherry Rossiter with your name, email address, phone number, and the town and state in which you would be available to speak.
