THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY
April 24, 2016

THE COLLECT
Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

The Very Reverend
 Beverly Findley Gibson  Ph.D.,
Dean and Rector

This Sunday we will celebrate the 11th anniversary of the naming of Christ Church as the cathedral of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast on April 23, 2005. Each year on the Sunday closest to that date we give thanks for the ministry entrusted to us by the people of this diocese, and we recommit ourselves to carrying out that mission. Everything we do in pursuing our mission is informed by the commandment that Jesus gives in this week's gospel: "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

Cathedral Celebration Sunday is the day each year when our bishop makes his annual parochial visit. This will be the first official parochial visit made by our new Bishop Russell Kendrick. Although the bishop is present on other major days of the church year, this is the day on which he baptizes and confirms, preaches and celebrates Eucharist, examines and signs our parish registers, and meets with the Vestry. This is also the day when we contribute to the bishop's discretionary fund; envelopes for this purpose will be available on the ministry table in the Chapter House, or you may simply place a check made out to CCC, with the notation "Bishop's discretionary fund," in the alms basin.

There will not be a baptism this year, but we will have the opportunity to renew our baptismal vows along with those who are being confirmed. Eight of our young people will assume the responsibility for fulfilling those vows initially taken on by their sponsors at their baptism. Four adults who have not yet received the laying on of hands in the apostolic succession will also be confirmed. We will all join with their sponsors and families in promising to do all in our power to support them in their life in Christ.

Then, following our worship, we will honor our newest confirmands and their families and friends with a celebration luncheon in the garden. Once again this year, the young men of the Mobile Kappa League, under the leadership of Carl Cunningham, Jr., will join us for this day. We will put into practice the ministry of hospitality that is one of our greatest gifts! I hope that as many of you as possible will be present for this special day in the life of the church, when we give thanks for the opportunity to serve our Lord here at Christ Church Cathedral.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

Christopher Powell
Organist and
Choir Master

The Cathedral Celebration is our own special day when we celebrate our ministry to the diocese as the cathedral church. This entails, among other things, serving as the "house of the bishop's chair," being a center of learning and outreach, opening our doors to all in our diocese and beyond, and being a seed-bed for new ideas, ministries, liturgies, and music. Since the bishop is indeed the chief shepherd of our diocese, then we certainly share in that role with humility, faith, and an earnest desire to help others. This is why I chose a setting of the 23rd Psalm as the anthem this week.
The Lord is my Shepherd, by Thomas Matthews (1915-1999), is a beautiful anthem in an unmistakably Anglican style. Matthews tone-painted this text quite well, and I think you'll hear everything from the dark valley to the flowing waters and the unbridled confidence in God's providence all our days. We are blessed to have three familiar guest musicians join us for this service, Enen Yu and Gosia Leska, violinists, and Guo-Sheng Huang, violoncellist. They will bring a richness to Matthews' anthem that I think would've pleased him greatly!
During Holy Communion, the choir will offer The Call by Ralph (pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). These words are probably familiar to most of you by now, but they bear repeating often for their poetic illustration of a relationship with God. Vaughan William's melody is haunting, and reminds one of a folk song - something Vaughan Williams was known for. We have him to thank not only for his original hymn tunes and anthems but his pairing of existing tunes and texts. Quite a few hymns we sing today were in some way touched by Vaughan Williams.
On Sunday, the Cathedral Handbell Choir will play our prelude music, Ring Praise, by Bob Burroughs (b. 1937). This prelude is actually a collection of three pieces for handbell choir, and you will hear interesting and varied techniques throughout. My favorite part is the last movement which uses "thumb damping," (ringing the bell while keeping a thumb placed on it) and I think you will like its joyful sound. The handbell choir has worked hard to prepare these pieces for our celebration on Sunday, and I am grateful for their dedication.
At our Cathedral Celebration, we will be reminded of our identity as the cathedral of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. While this is a blessing, it is also a calling. I hope our music this week will encourage us to embrace this calling with renewed energy.
