THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY
March 20, 2016

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

The Very Reverend Beverly Findley Gibson Ph.D.,
Dean and Rector

We will begin Palm Sunday, the Sunday of the Passion, in the garden, where we will hear the gospel story of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Then wearing and waving our blessed palms, we will proceed into the church, singing "All glory, laud, and honor." In doing these things, we begin our Holy Week of walking in the way of Jesus.

The gospel this week will be read dramatically, with members of the congregation speaking the words of the participants in the events of Christ's Passion. This marked change from our usual way of hearing the gospel affords us the opportunity to focus on the details of movement and character in this greatest of stories. It sets apart the days when we observe the Passion from other days of worship in a striking way.

The first portion of Sunday's gospel recounts the institution of the Lord's Supper, when Jesus transformed a Jewish devotional meal into an ongoing expression of our participation with him in death and victory over death. When we celebrate Eucharist on this Sunday, it will be directly within the context of the gospel, and we will be recreating with Jesus the meal he celebrated that night long ago.

Following communion, we will "strip the altar" in the church, as has been our practice for the last several years, since we will not be celebrating the Eucharist there until Easter Day. All of the vessels, hangings, and other appointments will be removed, and we will move into Holy Week as we depart in silence, to return on Wednesday evening for the extinguishing of lights in Tenebrae and on Friday to remember Christ's ultimate sacrifice.

Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of Holy Week, we will have communion in the Chapel at noon. Thursday evening will be the final service there, in which we will recreate the night before Christ died by washing feet as he did and the having the memorial meal that he gave us. The altar there will be stripped at the end of the service, and the church will be quiet and bare until Easter Day.

These worship experiences can intensify your experience of drawing closer to Christ during this holiest of times in the life of the Church. I hope to see many of you there.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

Christopher Powell
Organist and
Choir Master

This week, we will celebrate Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, also known as the Sunday of the Passion. This is a particularly interesting service because it blends elements of nearly all of our Holy Week services. Starting with the joyous strains of  All glory, laud, and honor
transitioning to Good Friday with the reading of the Passion according to Luke, and ending with the Maundy Thursday custom of stripping the altar during a setting of Psalm 22, our liturgy will give you a taste of what Holy Week is all about. However, it is important to note that you haven't experienced the fullness of these individual services unless you attend them! I would encourage you to come to as many of our special services this week as you can - they are the most important liturgies of the Christian faith. Of special interest this year is our Tenebrae service at 5:30PM on Wednesday, in the chancel. For more information about our musical selections during Holy Week, I would refer you to my latest article in The Messenger or your 2015/2016 Music Season booklet.

Sunday's offertory anthem is actually the final movement of the St. Matthew Passion by J. S. Bach (1685-1750), In Tears of Grief. Listen to the way the vocal and instrumental parts illustrate crying and the falling of tears in the first section. The bass line is especially poignant with its ascending and descending figures. On Sunday, we will have the pleasure of welcoming Enen Yu and Gosia Leska, violinists, and Guo-Sheng Huang, violoncellist, to perform with us on this and several other pieces. The second section of the Bach turns from the minor tonality of the first toward a lower, major tonality. While the "tears motif" is still present, it now takes on the character of a lullaby, emphasizing the last words of the text, "softly rest." In short, it is, at once, an epitaph for Christ and a lullaby for the sleep of death. This is Bach at his best.

During Communion, Aaron Adams and Katie Powell will sing Andrew Lloyd-Webber's setting of Pie Jesu. This piece is a favorite of people everywhere, and for good reason! Webber sets the text beautifully and lovingly. We are very pleased to welcome Aaron Adams, our treble soloist (boy soprano), to the cathedral once again. He is a fifth grade student of Katie at Molino Park Elementary School and was a great addition to our Christmas Eve service this year and to the Consecration of our fourth bishop.

Finally, our service will end with the stripping of the altar. During this most solemn time, the recitation or singing of the 22nd Psalm is prescribed. Last year, we did my own setting that mixes selected verses of the psalm with the seven last "words" of Christ. This year, we will do the same, but I have reset the words of Christ to be scored for soprano and string trio. I hope this piece will speak to you during this holy moment on Sunday. We will depart in silence on Sunday, ready to move into Holy Week, but we will return on Easter Sunday with songs of ultimate joy in the Resurrection. Don't miss out on this week-long journey with Christ.
