THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY
February 21, 2016

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

Within this week's e-blast you will find a link to a new podcast, called "Pulpit to Pew" or "P2P," produced by Cathedral Family members Stacy Wellborn and Johnny Gwin. You may have noticed Johnny "doodling" during Sunday worship; he is not misbehaving (in this instance, at least), but using his gifts as a visual artist as a way of connecting to words, music, and images that comprise our liturgy. Johnny and I have talked for a long time about ways to continue the interaction begun in worship through ongoing conversation during the week. When he and Stacy began their Deep Fried Studios podcast project, they asked me to participate as a way to get that kind of conversation started.

Here is how it works, at least for now. After our time at church on Sunday, I show up at their recording studio in downtown Mobile, and Johnny and I spend about 30 minutes having a conversation about what he heard (and drew) and what I have been thinking and trying to convey in the sermon. Then Stacy and Johnny use their gifts to edit and produce a short podcast. They will make that podcast "live" early in the week, and our web guru, Cindy McCrory, will pass it along via our website and eblast. (See next content block)

I found that last week's conversation led my thinking about the gospel and about our call as Christians in new directions. I hope it may do something similar for you. We welcome your responses and feedback.

This week will give us much to consider, as well. Our Old Testament lesson recounts God's first covenant with Abram, resplendent with images of the vastness of the stars and boldly vivid in its account of the sealing of the covenant. In our gospel lesson from Luke, Jesus responds to news of "that fox" Herod's pursuit of him, and he speaks his lament over Jerusalem, likening his love for its people to a hen gathering her brood under her wings.

There will be much to hear, to see, and to imagine and think about. Please "stay tuned" as we continue to make our way through the wilderness experience of Lent, returning to the embrace of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
As we observe the Second Sunday of Lent this week, our prayers will be aided by the music of three string players that we know and love here at the Cathedral. Namely, we will be joined by Enen Yu and Gosia Leska, violinists, and Guo-Sheng Huang, cellist. It is always wonderful to host them during our services, and I would encourage you to attend this Sunday as they accompany our hymns and provide prelude music.

Sunday's hymns will be familiar, but the choir anthem is of special interest.  Now let us all with one accord is a text attributed to Pope Saint Gregory the Great (540-604), and the chant accompanying it dates from the 12th century. Gregorian chant is a vast and important body of music not only for the church, but for Western music in general. Composers have been inspired by these chants since the very beginnings of polyphony (simultaneous combination of multiple parts/melodies), and they were instrumental in creating Western music as we know it. Sunday's chant sets St. Gregory's ancient Lenten text perfectly. Let yourself be drawn into its simplicity and know that countless Christians before us have heard these very tones. Verse one of St. Gregory's text is printed below.

Now let us all with one accord,
in company with ages past,
keep vigil with our heavenly Lord
in his temptation and his fast.

These words, when coupled with the chant, are ideal for calling us to a holy Lent, but so are the words of John Donne (1573-1631), found in a setting of my own composition presented by our Women's Trio during Communion. In my setting, I tried to communicate the whimsical overtones of this serious text in a way that is memorable, but unexpected. The first verse of Donne's text is included here.

Wilt thou forgive that sin, where I begun,
which is my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt thou forgive those sins through which I run,
and do run still, though still I do deplore?
When thou hast done, thou hast not done, for I have more.

As we move through this Lenten season, there are many such texts to aid us on our journey together, and we will certainly hear quite a variety of beautiful texts and music, culminating with the joy of Easter Sunday. However, until then, I would encourage you to allow our music ministry to minister to you through our services and concerts this season. Remember that in addition to the Sunday morning Eucharist, we also offer a 4:00 PM Eucharist in the Cathedral Chapel on Sundays during Lent. This Wednesday, February 24, we will host The Archduke Trio, Mobile's own chamber ensemble consisting of Enen Yu, violinist, Guo-Sheng Huang, 'cellist, and Robert "Bob" Holm, pianist. We are blessed to host many fine musicians here at the Cathedral, but certainly these three from the Mobile Symphony Orchestra are always a highlight of our season. See you in church!
