The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two

Ten o'clock in the morning

October 4, 2015

 Creation of the Animals
The Raphael Loggia
Artist: Raphael Sanzia

The Raphael Loggia consist of 13 arches forming a gallery 65 meters long and 4 meters wide. The construction was started by Bramante in 1512, under Pope Julius II and was completed by Raphael Sanzio under the reign of Leo X. The pictorial work was initiated in 1517.  The 52 scenes on the ceilings of the loggia are still popularly referred as "The Raphael Bible".

THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday will be the beginning of a new worship experience at a new time. For the Sundays of October, we will add a communion service in the chapel at 4:00 p.m. We will celebrate the Holy Eucharist using a more contemporary form, from the Enriching Our Worship supplement to the Book of Common Prayer. This service is intended to be less formal, more relaxed than our primary service on Sunday mornings, and it will feature easily sung Taize-style music, led by Christopher and Katie Powell and a few members of the Cathedral choir. Our aim is to create a sacred space at the close of the day in which to thank God for the week that was and to dedicate ourselves to being followers of Christ in the week ahead. It should be a good way to prepare for work and school and the challenges that begin on Monday morning. Dress is casual. Please invite friends and neighbors and anyone who is curious about Christ Church Cathedral or the Episcopal Church but perhaps intimidated by or unable to attend on Sunday morning. If there is good response to the October experiment, we may continue this practice during Lent and then consider how to make it a regular part of our worship life here at the Cathedral.

We will be reading our way through the story of Job and the letter to the Hebrews during October, and we will continue to follow Jesus through his ministry in Mark's gospel. This Sunday, we will read the exchange between God and Satan concerning the Lord's faithful servant Job. Satan contends that Job is only faithful because he has never been hurt or tested, and God tells Satan to give Job's faithfulness a try. The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus, God incarnate, became the pioneer of salvation through being tested and suffering. Jesus is "the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word." And yet he "tasted death for everyone." Jesus Christ goes before us all, showing us the way to be his followers; his way is love and acceptance and trust, even when testing and suffering come. This is the point Jesus makes to his disciples in Sunday's gospel lesson, when he says, "Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it."

Whether you come to worship this Sunday at 10:00 a.m., for glorious music and the whole Cathedral "experience," or at 4:00 p.m. for more intimate and reflective spiritual experience, you will meet the same risen Lord, who loves you and wants to lead you to wholeness and life.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, we offer two opportunities for worship at the Cathedral. At our 10:00 morning service, our music will be drawn from a variety of sources. The prelude and postlude feature the French mysticism of Jean Langlais (1907-1991) in his Canzona and Chant de Paix (Song of Peace). The prelude, Chant de Paix, is one of my favorite pieces. The high-pitched solo flute sounds you will hear are actually played by the pedals of the organ, and the sustained, lush chords are provided by the hands. It is unusual for the pedals to play a melody, but it creates a sense of suspended time, of peace and eternity. The postlude, Canzona, comes from Langlais' Folkloric Suite. This piece uses an old Franco-Flemish form of composition that was later adopted by Italian composers. A forerunner of more sophisticated forms like the fugue, the canzona, in the hands of Langlais, has a very medieval, primal sound. Langlais, though a composer very much a part of the modern era, often resurrected old forms of composition when writing his music. Almost as a rebellion against the widespread lack of form in many late 20th century compositions, he always gravitated toward ancient modes and compositional methods.

At the offertory, the choir will offer a hymn-turned-anthem of my own composition, Eternal light, shine in my heart. I entitled the hymn tune, Scott, after the late John Gavin Scott, Organist/Choirmaster of St. Thomas Church in New York City and former Organist/Choirmaster of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Scott was one of the greatest church musicians of our time and is a big part of the modern revival of English Cathedral music. I was privileged to see and hear Scott conduct the choir of St. Thomas on many occasions and to hear his organ recitals. He took the already famous St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys and made it into an astonishing musical ensemble. His love and dedication to his faith and his craft are things that many aspire to. One could learn a few things even sitting in the pew before Evensong listening to him conduct a pre-service warm-up. My tune, composed the day after his death, is my own tribute to him and to his legacy. Even though I didn't know him well, his music lives on in my memory and in the hearts of all who heard his playing or his choirs.

This week, there is a special opportunity to worship with us at the Cathedral at a different time. During the month of October, we will offer Chapel services on Sunday afternoons at 4:00. These simple Eucharists will be more informal than our morning services and will feature unique prayers and music within our faith tradition. Music for these services will heavily feature the music from the Taize Community, an ecumenical religious/monastic group in France. The music of Taize is powerful in its simplicity. Often just a repetitive refrain, the music is very conducive to meditation and prayer by creating a litany-like atmosphere. We will be joined by various musicians over the course of our October afternoon services and aided in prayer with diverse instrumentation and voices. If you or someone you know might be interested in a relaxed, Sunday afternoon Eucharist, consider attending on October 4, 11, 18, or 25! Regardless of which service you attend this week, we look forward to seeing you at Christ Church.
