THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

When Jesus announced for the second time what would eventually happen to him--that he would be betrayed, condemned, killed, and then rise again--his disciples did not understand what he was saying. And they were afraid to ask him. Consequently, they fell back into the everyday habit of considering their own desires and their hunger for status. When Jesus asked what they were doing, again they were silent, afraid to tell him the truth.

Why were they afraid to ask or to respond? No doubt because they sensed that Jesus' response would draw them out of themselves and the comfortable bubble of their self-referential worldview. Better to keep quiet and keep going in the way you know. But following Jesus didn't allow them to continue in that way. "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all," he told them.
Are there things you are afraid to ask of God? Maybe because you are afraid of what the answer might be? The letter of James addresses this fear, and also the issue of disappointment in not receiving the answers we wish, when he writes, "You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you."
James writes that the way to wisdom and understanding, the way to a good life, is living with gentleness, peace and mercy and living without envy, covetousness, and craving. In our readings for this Sunday, we see the ideal embodiment of this good life in the portrait of the capable wife from the conclusion of the book of Proverbs.

Living as a follower of Jesus does not mean that we will become perfect, or that if we follow all the rules we will receive whatever we want. All of us are broken, and we will all continue to fall short of where we hope to be. Our readings from scripture this week do not offer directions for success through the Gospel.

What this week's lessons point us toward is the way of discipleship that will transform us, leading us through what our collect calls the "things that are passing away" toward "those that endure." This Sunday we will once again have the opportunity to "draw near to God," knowing that when we do He will draw near to us. As you look forward to this Sunday, and to the week ahead, pray for the courage to ask.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

As we observe the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost this week, we have much appropriate music to aid our prayer. The prelude, Pastorale, by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901), falls into the unique musical category known as "organ plus" (the organ plus another instrument). Much organ repertoire is for organ alone or for organ and choir, and these relatively rare gems are often a delight to hear. Dr. Gosia Leska will play the violin for this piece. A composer not very well known outside of the organ world, Rheinberger is remembered as one of the organ's most prolific composers.

Our offertory anthem is a modern work by Ronald A. Nelson (b. 1929). Whoever Would Be Great Among You directly comments on Sunday's Gospel reading. Nelson sets the text almost like a round or canon. The baritones, altos, and sopranos each have their own melody and lyrics that expand upon each other. First, you will hear the baritones enter with the first sentence, the altos with the second, and finally the sopranos with the third, making the story complete. Perhaps you can use this piece to help you reflect on Christ's powerful message in the Gospel this week.

At Communion time, you will again hear an "organ plus" composition. This time, you will hear my very own work, Melody, for violin and organ. Designed as an interlude between the two Communion hymns, this piece features a thoughtful melody for the violin pared with a somewhat static accompaniment for the organ. Designed to be played rather slowly, the piece aims to allow time for reflection, much like musical interludes during plays or readings. Kaleidoscopic tone colors in the harmonies complete the experience.

Finally, the organ postlude will be a vintage work, Postlude in D, by Emma Louise Ashford (1850-1930). In classical music, documented female composers are rare, and female organ composers are rarer still! Unfortunately, while we know that many women composed sacred and secular music throughout history, their works were usually undervalued and not preserved. Ashford was born in Newark, Delaware to a family of English descent and was, from what I can tell, something of a child prodigy. She held her first organist position, in an Episcopal church for that matter, at the age of twelve. Later in life, Ashford went on to compose around 600 works for organ, voice, and other instruments. Rare for the time, she even traveled around the country performing and conducting her pieces. Her postlude for Sunday is idiomatic of church music of her generation. You'll hear big, loud enthusiasm as you go out into the world (or into the Chapter House).
