THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

This week, the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, we will experience music both old and new with a special emphasis on American organ composers for the prelude and postlude. The hymns will be familiar, but the offertory anthem, while using a familiar text, will probably be new to you. This week's offertory,
Father, we praise thee, will be sung to the tune,
Nocte surgentes, an ancient chant of the church. Between verses of this beautiful melody, I will improvise interludes designed to cast the text and tune in different lights.

Our service will begin with Pastorale on
"The Humble Heart" by Andrew Clarke (b.1942). One of the most beautiful Shaker tunes, The Humble Heart is treated Clarke in a classic American way, the hymn-prelude (arrangement of a hymn as a solo organ piece). Of course, our hymn-preludes have their roots in the German chorale prelude as perfected by Bach and practiced widely throughout the centuries. However, inspired by the lush tones of American organs, our unique, American style of writing hymn-preludes has taken on a life of its own. I would venture that most organ music played in churches across the country today is some form of hymn-prelude.

The Shaker Community was founded in the 18th century as an offshoot of the Quaker Community. Apparently they got their name from being "shaking Quakers," alluding to their colorful and dramatic displays during worship. Sadly, only three Shakers remain in the world today. At its height, the movement numbered 6,000. Interestingly, for such a small community, the Shakers are known for their unique and moving hymns. Below, find the text of the hymn on which Sunday's prelude is based.

Whence comes this bright celestial light,
What cause produces this?
A heaven opens to my sight,
Bright scenes of joy and bliss.
O Lord Jehovah art Thou here?
This light proclaims Thou art.
"I am indeed I'm always near
Unto the humble heart."

"The proud and lofty I despise,
And bless the meek and low.
I hear the humble soul that cries,
And comfort I bestow.
Of all the trees among the wood
I've chose the little vine;
The meek and low are nigh to me,
The humble heart is mine."

"Tall cedars fall before the wind,
The tempest breaks the oak,
While slender vines will bow and bend
And rise beneath the stroke.
I've chosen me a pleasant grove
And set my lovely vine
Here in my vinyard I will rove,
The humble heart is mine."

"Of all the kinds that range at large,
I've chose one little flock,
And those I make my lovely charge,
Before them I will walk.
Their constant shepherd I will be,
And all their ways refine,
And they shall serve and rev'rence me,
The humble heart is mine."

 - from the George DeWitt Hymnal, New Lebanon, 1822

Finally, as we prepare for the service this Sunday, I hope we will ponder the text above and that its enthusiasm will inspire us in worship. See you in church, and happy Labor Day!
