THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost                     August 30,  2015

As the summer season draws to a close, the lectionary takes a lingering look around, savors, and gives thanks for all the good things God has given us. The collect for the day addresses God as "the author and giver of all good things," and asks God to "nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works." Our worship this Sunday will be a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the good things God has created.

The three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary contains only one reading from the Song of Solomon, and we will hear it this Sunday. This book is a highly evocative poem, a celebration of the joys of living and loving. It employs the vivid images of great nature painting, the lyric notes of music, and the varied voices of drama. Take a few moments this weekend or this week to read your way through this part of the Bible like no other. It should bring joy to your heart and make you smile.

The epistle lesson this week comes from the first chapter of James. It begins, "Every generous act of giving, every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." Our response to God's enormous gift-giving should be to live in that spirit of generosity. For James, that means being generous with our attention and our compassion-"slow to speak, slow to anger." Above all, we are to be "doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves."

Jesus explains the importance of cultivating this loving way of being in our Gospel lesson from Mark. Responding to the Pharisees' complaints that his followers do not follow the prescriptions of the purity code, Jesus calls on his listeners to understand that there is nothing in creation that is unclean, as everything comes from God. Rather, "it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come." Our selfishness, fear, frustration, and violence are the sources of evil in the world. Jesus calls us to walk in love, to work for peace, to shun anger and cruelty, and to live in hope for God's making all things new.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost                     August 30, 2015

Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether (1945) is a beautiful and traditional anthem by Harold W. Friedell (1905-1958). This Sunday, our Cathedral Choir returns from summer break, and this will be our offertory anthem. Friedell was an American organist and composer. Serving churches in and around New York City, his largest job was as organist/choirmaster of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on Park Avenue. Friedell was also on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in the School of Music and was greatly respected in the national and international musical community. His wife, Amy, a soprano, was also a notable musician. Sunday's anthem, Draw Us in the Spirit's Tetheris only one of many works by Friedell, but it is certainly his most popular selling 20,000 copies in a given year. The tune also appears in many hymnals as the hymn tune, Union Seminary. The text, by Percy Dreamer (1867-1936), speaks of Christian unity with a special emphasis on Holy Communion. Friedell's musical treatment of the text expounds upon it well. As with most good composers, the music serves the meaning behind the text, and one has a clear sense of tone painting in the soaring "alleluias" at the end of each verse. The text by itself is beautiful, and I've included the second verse below. As we begin our new Music Season, what could be more appropriate than reflecting on our connection to Jesus' first disciples?

"As the brethren used to gather In the name of Christ to sup,

Then with thanks to God the Father Break the bread and bless the cup,

Alleluia! Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up."

Our choir has worked hard over the summer due to the Bishop's Consecration and related events, but we are ready to have a great 2015/16 Music Season! Soon, you will receive a booklet in the mail listing our various concerts and special services for the coming year. Also, please consider if you or someone you know would be interested in joining the choir. It's the beginning of the season, so now is the perfect time to join! Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 6:30 P. M. in the Huger House. Our Handbell Choir rehearses Wednesdays from 5:30 P. M. until 6:15 P. M. upstairs in the Huger House. We would love for you to join us. Come talk to me on Sunday after the service or speak with one of our choir members if you would like to be a part of our Music Ministry.
