The Collect
O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES / BIBLE CHALLENGE FOR THIS SUNDAY

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
Easter Day
April 5, 2015

As we celebrate the most joyful day of the church year this Sunday, Easter, we have many reasons to be joyful as a Cathedral family! We also have a lot of great music to accompany our celebration. Starting with the prelude, three trumpet tunes by a variety of Baroque period composers, and ending with the postlude, J. S. Bach's Fantasia in C Major for organ, we will return from Lent in striking fashion. Our 2014/2015 Music Season has officially ended, and with it, our journey from Advent to Easter is completed.

We sing Jesus Christ is risen today as our processional hymn, He is risen, he is risen! as our sequence hymn, and The day of resurrection as our recessional hymn. Between these great staples of the Easter repertoire, we will sing such favorites as Welcome, happy morning!, Hail thee festival day, and Alleluia, alleluia! Give thanks to the risen Lord. At the offertory, the choir will present

Eternal Praise, a Victorian style anthem by Everett Titcomb (1884-1968). I found this piece in our library in its first edition dated from 1948. Although there aren't any notes as to when this piece was first performed here at Christ Church, it almost certainly has a long history here. One of the joys of having such a historic church is learning from its past and foraging in its libraries! Our choir has worked hard on this piece to make it sound fresh as if it were written yesterday, and our organ is perfectly suited to Titcomb's expressive accompaniment.

Everett Titcomb was an extraordinary Episcopal church musician who served from 1910 until 1960 at the Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Boston. An early exponent of Renaissance music, Titcomb led his choir is performances of early Italian music before it was "mainstream" to do so. Through his sheer dedication to his parish, his organ playing, and composition of sacred pieces, Titcomb carved out a niche in the canon of Anglican church music composers. While not as well known as some others, it is remarkable that Titcomb achieved all of this being largely self taught! We hope you will enjoy his rousing anthem on Sunday.

Finally, while our official music season is over, we still have many beautiful anthems, solos, and instrumental pieces to share with you through the Easter season and the summer! Look for more information in future emails. Also, we are looking at having some musical events this summer that will be a kind of "bonus" to our normal season. The Cathedral Choirs and our entire music team wish you a blessed and happy Easter!
