WORSHIP NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY
First Sunday after Christmas Day December 28, 2014

Our celebration of Christ's birth began on Christmas Eve, continued on Christmas Day, and will still be going on this Sunday, the first Sunday after Christmas Day and the fourth day of Christmas. While the spending frenzy of the culture culminates in the gift-giving of Christmas Day and then moves on to the next thing, in the life of the Church that day is the beginning, not the end, of Christmas. We have twelve whole days, until the Feast of the Epiphany, to celebrate the light of Christ that has come into the world.

Our collect for this Sunday thanks God for pouring "upon us the new light of [His] incarnate Word" and asks God to grant "that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives." Our readings from scripture elaborate on the divine gift we have received. Isaiah strikes a note of rejoicing, his "whole being" exulting in God's gift of salvation. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul reminds us that through Christ's birth we have become the children of God by adoption, and because we are children, "God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts." The gospel for this Sunday is always the magnificent opening of John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The Word became incarnate in this world, and yet the world did not know him. But to all who receive him, he gives "power to become children of God." We have seen his glory, John proclaims, "the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth," and "[f]rom his fulness we have all received, grace upon grace."

I hope that you will make time to reflect daily during this Christmas time on the grace God has poured into our lives. In our worship, we will give thanks for the light that has been given to us, and we will be strengthened to let that light shine forth in our lives. On Christmas Day, I recited a couplet that Lord George Carey shared recently in the Daily Mail. Learned long ago, he finds it relevant today: "Though Christ a thousand times in Bethlehem is born, if he's not born in thee, thy heart's forlorn." May these twelve days of Christmas be for us all a time of joyful celebration of Christ's birth in our hearts.

MUSIC NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY

First Sunday after Christmas Day December 28, 2014

We will celebrate the First Sunday after Christmas Day this week at Christ Church Cathedral. Although December 25 has come and gone, it is still the Christmas Season. Though difficult for me to understand when I was in my confirmation class as a child, Christmas really is its own liturgical season! So, come to church this week ready to sing more carols and listen to Christmas readings from scripture.

Sunday's Gospel is the famous beginning from St. John's Gospel. In this reading, the author relates a poetic description of Christ's Nativity that goes beyond the narrative of its temporal and physical occurrence. In fact, these first paragraphs in John's Gospel are nearly a summary of Christ's identity. These words draw us forward into the personhood of Christ beyond the manger. To that end, our offertory anthem will be A Stable Lamp is Lighted. This piece, composed by David Hurd (b. 1950), draws connections between Jesus' birth and the events at the end of his earthly life. The lyrics are by Richard Wilbur (b. 1921), an award-winning American poet. As an aside, Wilbur wrote some of the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's (1918-1990) setting of Candide.  His text for this Sunday's anthem bears quoting here.

A stable lamp is lighted

Whose glow shall wake the sky;

The stars shall bend their voices,

And every stone shall cry.

And every stone shall cry,

And straw like gold shall shine;

A barn shall harbor heaven,

A stall become a shrine.

This child through David's city

Shall ride in triumph by;

The palm shall strew its branches,

And every stone shall cry.

And every stone shall cry;

Though heavy, dull, and dumb,

And lie within the road-way

To pave his kingdom come.

Yet he shall be forsaken,

And yielded up to die;

The sky shall groan and darken,

And every stone shall cry.

And every stone shall cry,

For stony hearts of men:

God's blood upon the spear-head,

God's love refused again.

But now, as at the ending,

The low is lifted high;

The stars shall bend their voices,

And every stone shall cry.

And every stone shall cry,

In praises of the Child

By whose descent among us

The worlds are reconciled.

This piece and Sunday's Gospel passage are similar: both texts elude to the fullness of Christ's mission. We will also sing other carols on Sunday including Joy to the world, the Lord is come!, It came upon the midnight clear, and The snow lay on the ground. However, our sequence hymn will be Let all mortal flesh keep silence. Though normally thought of as an Advent hymn, I found the text particularly poignant for Sunday because of its emphasis on silence, awe, and reverence at the presence of Christ. As we think on the Incarnation, I hope we will all be filled with reverence and wonder. The church, in her wisdom, gives us weeks after  December 25 to bask in the glow of Christmas after all the shopping and eating is over. Let's take advantage of it!
