Music notes for this Sunday:
Looking at the hymns for this Sunday, one might see the common thread running through them. Sunday's readings are full of images of God's power and providence. The overall feeling of the day is very well summed up in the psalm of the day, Psalm 90, that speaks of God as a loving refuge. However, in contrast with the overall comforting feeling that the psalm imparts, there is an element of holy fear and even melancholy in the words, "You sweep us away like a dream; we fade away suddenly like the grass." The psalm seems to remind us that although we are secure in God's love, we also have a temporal nature. It bids us to focus on the things that are everlasting, and place our whole trust in God. It bids us to rest in God's wondrous presence and consolation.
O God, our help in ages past, our processional hymn, is a paraphrase of Psalm 90 by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). Watts was the prolific writer of around 750 hymn texts and is considered the father of English hymnody. The two principal themes illustrated in the Psalm, power and providence, continue to be expressed throughout the service in the sequence hymn, Immortal, invisible, God only wise, both communion hymns, How lovely is thy dwelling-place, and Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and in our recessional hymn, All hail the power of Jesus' Name!. One could hardly ask for more diverse or vivid images than those offered in these hymns.
The choir anthem during the offertory this week is I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes by Leo Sowerby (1895-1968). A composer of over 500 works, Sowerby was one of the most iconic figures in the field of American church music during the 20th century. A self-taught organist (he had formal training in composition), Sowerby was able to play the organ at a very high level - a level sufficient enough for him to be appointed organist-choirmaster at St. James Cathedral (Episcopal) in Chicago in 1927. His anthem that we will offer on Sunday is a beautiful depiction of Psalm 121. Interestingly, when the choir of Christ Church made a recording in 1968, they included this as one of the selections. So, not only has this piece become a favorite around the country, but it has a "personal" connection to us.
Before our communion hymns, we are all invited to join in singing the Communion Antiphon. Though unfamiliar to many, the order of celebrating the Eucharist/Mass contains antiphons and psalms, referred to as "The Proper of the Day", that may be used during the entrance procession, offertory, and during communion. In fact, this is where most Gregorian Chant was and still is used today. The old chants served a specific function during the liturgy that has since been largely replaced by hymns, anthems, and other types of music. As a church within the Anglican tradition, we have inherited the option to use the antiphons and psalms during our services. While the "propers" are most often sung in high Anglo-Catholic churches, they are a part of our tradition of worship - how our ancestors worshiped - and we should get to know them better. The particular setting we will use on Sunday for the antiphon and psalm is a modern setting, but the text is from antiquity. Between repetitions of the antiphon, a soloist will sing verses of Psalm 20. It is important to note that the word "antiphon" has come to be synonymous with the word "refrain". The word comes from the Latin antiphona and means to sing responsively between multiple groups of people. Try singing along on Sunday and listening to the beautiful words as you commune with God and neighbor. This is simply one of the many, beautiful ways we can express ourselves as a community during communion.
This Sunday is replete with the songs of ancient Israel, the psalms. How appropriate that we should sing these words of scripture! When you come to church this week, it is our hope that the impressions of God's power and providence will be an inspiration in your daily life as we strive to more fully rest in God.
