THE CENTURION'S SERVANT
1914
Artist: Sir Stanley Spencer

Spencer liked the story in St Luke Chapter 7, in which after marvelling at the centurion's faith, Jesus heals his sick servant without entering the house. Bringing this into his own time and place, Spencer set the scene in the maid's bedroom in the attic of his home, a room which he too never entered. Sometimes he heard strange voices coming from the room which he later discovered was simply the maid talking through the wall to another servant. Thus, the biblical narrative reminded him of experiences in his own life. These also included kneeling in prayer at church, and Cookham villagers praying around the bed of a dying man, a custom his mother had told him about. The youth on the bed has Spencer's own features.

THE COLLECT

O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

NEW CHECK IN - CHECK OUT PROCEDURE

Please bring your children each morning to the back office door, next to the small parking lot. Please know you will not be able to enter any other way because that the gates on campus will remain locked during VBS for the safety of our children. Registration will be set-up at this entrance. Please check your child in each day so that we have an accurate count for the official Athenian census! Our assistant tribe leaders will walk the children into the Chapter House to meet their tribe leaders and other tribe members. Parents are, of course, always welcome!

We will conclude each day with a closing celebration in the chapel. Each day, please sign your child out on the sign-out sheet at the registration table. Every child MUST be signed out EACH day! This is for the safety of our children.

Finally, please be sure to note ANY allergies (food or animals) and other medical conditions on the registration form. We will have breads, fruits, and goldfish crackers. We will be happy to provide an alternate treat for anyone with allergies. Please let us know ahead of time if possible. On Wednesday, the petting zoo will return to CCC. Please let us know if any child is unable to participate.

Next week during the service you will hear the Cathedral children singing the songs they learned at VBS.

To help support VBS, please make a donation at the "Wishing Well" in the Chapter House.

Transition Update

Dear Christ Church Cathedral Family,

The Canons of the Episcopal Church charge the Vestry with the election of the Rector of a parish. In consultation with Bishop Duncan and his representative, The Reverend Canon Massey Gentry, we have begun the transition process preceding such an election.

The first task we have been given is to develop a parish profile that documents who we are as a parish family and what is important to us as we call a new rector. Your participation is essential to this work. In June, you will receive a questionnaire both by mail and electronically that we ask be completed and returned to the Profile Committee of the Vestry. The results of this survey will guide the Vestry in the next steps of the transition and will be published in the Messenger.

Please pray for your Vestry that they may be guided by the Holy Spirit in the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Faithfully,
Leslie P. Ladd
Senior Warden

John S. McClelland, Jr.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL MISSION

The Cathedral is the spiritual center of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.  The Cathedral is a dynamic and evolving church that serves as a liturgical, educational, and pastoral center for Diocesan life. It serves as a visible symbol of unity and promotes growth, hope, and a deepening trust in the Lord. The Cathedral is a place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be faithfully preached and responded to, and it will model new concepts and ideas for education, evangelism, and outreach to which the Gospel calls us.
