Healing of the Paralytic, Dura Europos (c.235)

This wall painting, depicting the Healing of the Paralytic, is the earliest known representation of Jesus, dating from about 235 AD.

The painting was found in 1921 on the left-hand wall of the baptismal chamber of the house-church at Dura-Europos on the Euphrates River in modern Syria.

It is now part of the Dura Europos collection at the Yale University Gallery of Fine Arts.

THE COLLECT

O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Sunday School may be over, but Children's Chapel will continue throughout the summer. Vacation Bible School will be held June 4 through June 6. Special thanks to Alison Mitchell for her leadership and planning. She was graciously assisted by Katie Patton and Barry Weeks.

Now is not too soon to decide to help with Christian Education, which will begin again in the fall on Sunday, September 8. If you are interested in helping, please contact Alison Mitchell or call the Cathedral office.

UNITED THANK OFFERING INGATHERING
Sunday, May 12

United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. The Ingathering this year will be next Sunday, May 12. UTO is a project of the Episcopal Church Women. UTO materials are available on the Ministry table.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL MISSION

The Cathedral is the spiritual center of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.  The Cathedral is a dynamic and evolving church that serves as a liturgical, educational, and pastoral center for Diocesan life. It serves as a visible symbol of unity and promotes growth, hope, and a deepening trust in the Lord. The Cathedral is a place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be faithfully preached and responded to, and it will model new concepts and ideas for education, evangelism, and outreach to which the Gospel calls us.
