Rome Achieves National Service Award

Congratulations for all of the hard work members of the Exchange Club of Rome.  Once again our club has been recognized by National Exchange for completing the minimum requirement of one project each in the Programs of Service of Community Service, Americanism, Youth, and Child Abuse Prevention plus two additional projects of any kind.  That is just the minimum and Rome is racking up more projects monthly.  GOOD JOB ROME!

National Day of Service

Saturday, October 22, was our National Day of Service.  The Rome Exchange Club choose to make some needed updates and repairs to our Family Resource Center.   Here Exchangites Tom Couch and John Hine work to dis-assemble a playhouse at the FRC.  Also working on this project was Bill King and Mike Elliott.  The playhouse is no longer needed and was dis-assembled and donated to the Habitat ReStore for re-sale.

Meanwhile, Barbara  and Sherry assist FRC President Jim Talley with the installation of latches and door knobs on doors in the children's toy room.

At our last meeting....

Exchangites Charlie Schroeder and Louise Branham presented our program about DIGS.  DIGS is a non-profit that currently provides a house for developmentally challenged men. They currently are raising money for a similar house for women.  Exchangite Charlie Schroeder is the President of DIGS organization board.

Louise also outlined plans  for a Boogie on Broad event is slated for Nov. 5 to raise funds for the new women's home. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and the dance up Broad Street will begin at 11 a.m. Registration for the event is $10 and is available online at www.digsrome.org.

Downtown Trick or Treat Crossing Guards
Once again this year, Rome's Downtown Development Authority is asking the Exchange Club of Rome to protect the children during the annual Downtown Trick or Treat on Monday, October 31.

Exchangites will be crossing guards at several intersections and crosswalks to insure the thousands of children make it across Broad and the side streets safely.

The Downtown Trick or Treat event is from 3 -5 P.  Exchangites should meet at Board and 3rd Ave at 2:30P

Congratulations !!
  • Exchangite Lee Niedrach married his longtime sweetheart Christine Wong in Atlanta on Saturday.  The couple will also celebrate a traditional Chinese 10 course wedding banquet in New York City in November.
  • Our own Jackie Moreland's firm Hype, Inc. was honored by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Week.
Santa for Seniors

The Holidays and Santa for Seniors will be here soon. Often there are Seniors in our Community who do not have family and we will be asking you to adopt a Senior for the Holidays. You will be given a name, their location, and a list of things they would like to have. The Sheriff's Department will be delivering the gifts Christmas week.

If you think you are interested, please let Wanda Whitten know.

Family Resource Center

This is the last in a series of articles that outlines how a family served by the Family Resource Center was served. In the first two articles, we shared information about a young family and their infant. Over our 8 months of service, the family has grown from feeling so overwhelmed that twice weekly visits were needed to feeling less stressed. Parents have learned how to cope with a crying infant, developed more realistic expectations for themselves and their infant, strengthened their budgeting and money management skills, and navigated through a significant life stress of Dad losing his job. They've put new information into practice into their everyday life. The family trusts their Parent Aide and mom especially calls on her when she has a question or feels overwhelmed. Having this support is important as statistics show that infant children are at high risk when primary caregivers feel alone and overwhelmed.

It is time to begin working for case closure. However, as we move toward this goal, we notice an increase in tension in the home. Mom is concerned that they are on the brink of divorce, Dad feels alone, and the couple is frequently arguing. Though our Parent Aides are not counselors, their Parent Aide was able to help parents identify the ups and downs of marriage, referred them to low cost counseling resources, and helped them identify ways to maneuver through this season. Our Parent Aide also helped the family identify and connect to other community resources---daycare/preschool options, education/job training for Mom (for Mom to be more employable and reduce some of the financial strain in the family, she needs additional training), and positive support systems (e.g. church or MOPS groups). This couple weathered the storm in their marriage and they continue to do well. We were soon able to celebrate their success and closed their case after 10 months of service.

How do these services impact the most important player in this story, the child? His parents better understand child development, have more realistic expectations, are talking with him and reading to him and spending more time with him, have improved their communication with each other, have decreased tension/arguing in their home, have identified healthy support systems, and are better equipped to weather financial challenges. The risk of this child experiencing abuse/neglect has been greatly decreased and his parents have the skills to help him thrive.

The family is stronger---and it is because of YOUR support! Thanks Exchange!

Tina

Meal Policy Of The Exchange Club Of Rome
Members are encouraged to bring prospective member guests to all regular meetings.  The club is most happy to pay for the meals of prospects the first three times they visit, more then that you are required to pay for your guest's meal unless they have submitted an application for membership, in which case the meals will remain at no charge  If you bring a non-prospect guest, someone to just join you for lunch, or if you take out a lunch for anyone that is not a member, you are required to pay for your guest's or takeout meal.  The cost of the meal is $10 per meal and must be paid to the Treasurer or other officer at the time of the meeting.  Money can also be placed in the Dues Box in the lobby.
