Family Resource Center
Have you ever wondered what happens after the Exchange Club Family Resource Center receives a referral? Just how does the Exchange Parent Aide program work for a family? With this 3-part series of articles, we'll share the experience of one family: We received a referral on a young family from a friend who thought they needed extra support. Luckily, the friend had permission to make this call and we were able to quickly make an appointment to visit the family in their home. Mom and Dad were nervous about us at first but agreed to meet with a Parent Aide on a weekly basis. This family has a lot going for them---Dad has a job, there is some local family support, and parents are attached to their newborn. But they are experiencing stressors that can set up their baby for risk---family members aren't accessible on a day-to-day basis, the baby cries a lot, Mom is on her own during the day while Dad works, and both have overly high expectations about how their baby should act. During our first few months of service, the Parent Aide met with this family at least twice a week with phone contact in between. We learned that Mom was staying up a lot at night with the baby and then trying to keep the "perfect house" in the daytime. She was overwhelmed---and described crying at night when the baby wouldn't stop crying. We shared information about crying and offered suggestions for soothing the baby...and for coping when baby can't be soothed. Though Dad works full-time, the family is quite strained financially so we evaluated their budget with them, offered suggestions, and connected them with WIC and food stamps to fill in some of the gaps while they get on their feet financially. Through home visits, sharing information verbally, modeling skills, and watching/discussing DVDs, our services focused on day-to-day infant care, dealing with stress and financial pressures, and managing marital transitions as the family adjusted to a new child. We saw the parents grow in confidence and we coached them as they practiced these new skills. As a result, the stress level in the home decreased. There is still more work to be done, however...we'll tell you more about that next week!
