Toys for Tots
The 2015 Toys for Tots Program is in the rearview mirror. We are still waiting for a final report from one of the other counties, but here are some numbers that look solid.
- Children served: 1,585 in Rome/Floyd; 2,276 in all three counties
- Donated Items (toys, books and stocking stuffers) Counted, Sorted, and Distributed in the Community Building: 13,916
- Purchased Items (toys and books) Counted, Sorted, and Distributed in the Community Building: 3,640
- Total Items Counted, Sorted, and Distributed in the Community Building: 17,556
All balls were inflated to the proper pressure prior to distribution. Over $2,000 in batteries were purchased and a crew put at least one full set of batteries in those toys needing them. All children received toys that worked when they opened them on Christmas morning.
All of this was possible through the efforts of many, many volunteers from throughout the community. One of the constants was the faces of Exchange Club members appearing when needed most, many bringing family or friends along to lend a hand. Some were only able to spend an hour or two, but came and gave three hours of effort in those one or two hours. It was a team effort, and the team won! The children who may only know you as an "Elf" absolutely appreciate your presence, efforts, and caring. On their behalf, and of their grateful parents, "THANK YOU, EXCHANGE CLUB MEMBERS!"
On another, almost begging note, the company that donated warehouse space for us to store the collection boxes, racks, and other materials and supplies has grown rapidly and we no longer have "off-season" space. The 2016 Toys for Tots program needs to find a location with at least 2,000 square feet of space that is secure, almost free of insects and rodents, and can provide access during normal working hours to our workers. It does not have to be in the same location, but another 1,000+ square feet would allow us to continue to purchase close-out, clearance, and heavily discounted toys during the year. The value of this is that most purchased toys were bought at less than half of retail price. Donated space is considered to be a gift-in-kind donation to the Toys for Tots Foundation and, as such, can be used as a Federal income tax deduction. If you have such space or know of someone who may, please email us at rometoys@gmail.com.

Are You Saving Those Bottle Tops and Carton Ends?
At a previous meeting, Exchangites Barbara Carter and Meredith Brown outlined plans for this years scrapbook. The duo explained they are also asking Exchangites to save bottle tops from Coke products and the end package panels from Coke can products. There will be a basket in the lobby of the Palladium to deposit them and they will be exchanged for on-line services in producing the scrapbook.
