Child Safety Seats

In Rome/Floyd County officers issued 187 child restraint citations during Operation Rolling Thunder. During these enforcement efforts Child Passenger Safety Technicians issued 79 child seats to families who were in need. If a driver was involved in an enforcement action they were provided an opportunity to get access to a proper seat within a reasonable amount of time However, if they were unable to establish contact with anyone who could assist them or if they claimed they were unable to afford one, a properly fitted seat was provided to them  by the Rome Police Department so they could be back on the roadway with as minimal intrusion as possible.

The issuance of 79 child seats within the operation period seriously depleted the department's resources. The Rome Police Departments Safe Seat Initiative is solely dependent on resupply. Not only does this initiative service Rome/Floyd County, but also seats are provided to Georgia State Patrol Post #38 and the MNTEN Network to aid families who are involved in significant traffic collisions or enforcement actions.

At that point the Rome Exchange Club decided to help out.  It was decided that the profits from our Yard Sale  - $1600 - would be donated to the Rome Police Department
to restock their supply.  Last week,  members of the Rome Police Traffic Division as well as several Rome Exchangites met at KMart to purchase child safety seats that will be given out as needed to parents who cannot afford a proper safety seat.

Veterans Day Observance

The "Blue Cup" money on Friday, November 13th is designated for Veterans Matter.

This organization and the National Exchange Club have partnered and united to support 49,000 homeless veterans obtain suitable rental housing. The money we donate on Friday will help veterans in our community, region and state. I ask you to be generous as we join Exchange Clubs across the nation on this Veterans Day in Support of Our Own.

Bryan, and J.P., were privileged to hear Ken Leslie deliver his address to the members at the National Convention in Columbus, Ohio this past summer and can share what they heard and saw. Let's all make this Veterans Day something special for all veterans, particularly the homeless.

Veterans Day Flag Ceremony

November 11, 8 AM - Tower Plaza,  Rome City Auditorium
As Veterans stood beside their Service Branch Flag, a band  led by Exchangite Bill King played each service's song.    Then as the band performed our National Anthem, members of the Rome Exchange Club raised the American Flag.  Exchangite Giles Chapman was the Master of Ceremonies,  recognizing the various organizations that participated in the ceremony.

November 11,  11 AM - Myrtle Hill Cemetery
Again Exchangites participated in a community wide Veterans Day ceremony.

Exchangite Bob Williams lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Known Soldier from WWI as Exchangites Giles Chapman and Bill King offer a hand salute.

The Honor Guard from the American Legion Post A#5 fire a rifle salute to honor all Veterans who have gone on before us.

Thanks to the Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club for their preparations and to all members who participated in these ceremonies  honoring our Veterans.
Congratulations!!!

Congratulations to Exchangites Rhonda and Ronnie Wallace on the recent birth of their new Granddaughter, Harper Jane Wallace, to their son Hayden Wallace and his wife Emily.

Congrats go out to Exchangite Kirk Milam on the birth of his first grandchild, a granddaughter, Edith Adalia Milam to their son Adam.

Proudly we hail.....

We need nominations for "Proudly We Hail" American Flag displays at residences, businesses, schools, and government sites.  Nomination forms will be available at the meeting Friday.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As Exchangites, we are used to looking around our community for properly displayed American Flags so that we can recognized and honor the businesses, government buildings, schools, and residences that proud fly our flag.  Of course sometimes we find flags that are just the opposite,  tattered and faded and just too worn out to be displayed.  Recently Exchangite Bryan Shealy noticed just such a flag at, of all places, our Rome Chamber of Commerce.  The Rome Exchange Club Board decided to offer to replace this flag, and on Friday, November 6th, after our meeting, a group of Exchangites visited the Chamber and raised an brand new flag in front of their building.  The Exchange CLub has also replaced worn flags at a number of local schools in our area.

Last weeks meeting......

Last weeks meeting was highlighted by a visit from National Exchange Club President-elect, Elizabeth Grantham.  Elizabeth was visiting a number of clubs in Georgia including Macon and Milledgeville, as well Rome.  Elizabeth updated the club on various happenings at the National level as well as delivering a proclamation honoring the Rome Exchange Club's 79th year of service.  A resolution was also delivered individually  to all Exchangites with 25 or more years of service.  If you are in that category and were not at the meeting,  you can see J P Cooper for your resolution.

Elizabeth updates the club on various happenings at the National Exchange.

The Rome Exchange Club was recognized with a proclamation recognizing our 79 years of service.

Meet our newest member
Our newest member, Ralph White, was inducted by Elizabeth

All Exchangites with 25 or more years of service were recognized with a resolution.  Paul Smith pictured here was recognized for his 61 years of service.

Just for fun....

Exchangite Ken Cormany forwarded me this YouTube video.  It is hilarious and brings back some memories if you are old enough to remember when Ronald Reagan was President.

Only those of us over 50 would probably recognize the people in the front row (Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill, President Reagan, and Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker).
(Note the secret service behind the President trying not to laugh)

Toys for Tots.....

Toys For Tots Train

It's not too early to start thinking about and supporting our Toys for Tots effort this year.

A robust thanks to all the XC volunteers that registered families this past week for the 2015 toy program. In the 15 hours that we registered families, over 400 families were interviewed, with over 1200 children registered. There was a steady stream of applicants and the work was non-stop. Exchangite Marti Robles' husband, Al, and a student from Georgia Highlands both registered and acted as translators, making the process more comfortable for the Hispanic families. Not only was that part successful, but Exchangite June Noble and a non-member have already entered all of the data and June is now doing the final verification on the data. This will enable us to better plan what ages and genders we need to buy toys for, a three-week jump on past years.

A final registration will be held on Saturday, December 5th to accommodate those did not or could not make the registration sessions last week. Be on the lookout for signup sheets!

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard!   - Hal Gosnell

Exchangite Bob Evans is just one of the Exchange volunteers that has been working signing up families for toys to be distributed on December 19th at our fairgrounds.

TFT Chair Hal Gosnell has also been busy.  He has lined up a number of items to raffle and tickets are available from him at each meeting.
In addition to the handmade items shown here,  a Big Green Egg with it's nest, as well as a Cultured Pearl Necklace from Ford, Gittings, and Kane Jewelers are going to be raffled off.

Family Resource Center News...

The Family Resource Center is in the midst of our Adopt-a-Family for Christmas program. We currently have 20 families that we are serving through this program, but still have five families left unsponsored. We are doing our best to make sure that all of the families who have applied for this program are able to get the assistance that they need. The sizes of the families range from 2-4 people.

If you are interested in sponsoring a family, please contact Kelsee Estes, the FRC intern at kelsee.estes@vikings.berry.edu or call (706) 290-0764.

Tina Bartleson The Exchange Club Family Resource Center is pleased to announce that Tina Bartleson, Executive Director, has been appointed to the Department of Family and Children's Services State Advisory Board by Governor Nathan Deal. Additional information can be found at http://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2015-10-30/deal-appoints-23-boards

The State Advisory Board will review and make recommendations to the director of the Division of Family and Children Services regarding issues relating to the protection of children and the welfare and public assistance functions of the division.  Bartleson has more than 26 years of experience working with children and families, primarily in child abuse prevention.  She is a member of the Exchange Club of Rome and holds a master's degree in Public & Social Services from West Georgia College.

According to Bartleson, "I am honored to have an opportunity to share lessons learned through the Exchange Club Family Resource Center's prevention programs and our work with children and families. Family engagement and support is critical to the protection of children." According to Representative Katie Dempsey, "I am grateful that Gov. Deal appointed Tina to this very important position and even more grateful that she accepted this opportunity to serve.  Her experience will be helpful beyond measure as our State works together to keep Georgia's children safe."

  • Campaign update: To date this year, contributions to our Annual Campaign have totaled over $82,000!  We are almost to goal and invite you to contact the Center today to make your pledge if you have not done so!
  • The Center hosted a Volunteer Parent Aide training on the weekend of October 24th with 8 participants.  We are in process of following up with these potential volunteers to determine how they want to serve children & families.
  • Volunteer Needs:  The FRC could use some helping hands as follows:
    •  Organize in-kind donations to the FRC:  We need some helping organizing our supply closets...and to integrate gifts such as those just received from Second Avenue Baptist Church's "Virtual Shower" (see picture)
    •  Parenting Group Assistant:  Shemika is looking for an assistant to help with the "details" involved in running a twice monthly parenting group.  Activities would include:  room set-up, setting up refreshments, calling speakers, etc.  Time commitment is 1-2 hours twice monthly.
Virtual Shower - compliments of Second Avenue Baptist Church.

Meal Policy Of The Exchange Club Of Rome
Members are encouraged to bring prospective member guests to all regular meetings.  The club is most happy to pay for the meals of prospects the first three times they visit, more then that you are required to pay for your guest's meal unless they have submitted an application for membership, in which case the meals will remain at no charge  If you bring a non-prospect guest, someone to just join you for lunch, or if you take out a lunch for anyone that is not a member, you are required to pay for your guest's or takeout meal.  The cost of the meal is $10 per meal and must be paid to the Treasurer or other officer at the time of the meeting.  Money can also be placed in the Dues Box in the lobby.
