Exchange's Project At Myrtle Hill  Cemetery
by Len Woodward

The program  will cover the events which led up to the project to identify and tag the trees on the cemetery property; the results of the survey; the developments since completion of the project, future steps, and the outlook for cemetery improvements.

Len was born and raised in London, England and was an immigrant to the United States from the UK after service in the Royal Air Force in the UK and Germany.  He graduated from the University of Georgia  with a degree in Forest Management from the (now) Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Len spent multiple years in forest management and the forest industry in the United Kingdom, Florida, Georgia and Quebec, Canada.  He retired to Rome from Quebec, Canada with wife Beverly.  Len is active in the Exchange Club of Rome and as a volunteer at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia.

Halloween Downtown Trick or Treat

Again this year, the Rome Exchange Club will be providing crossing guards as our young Trick or Treaters will be coming to Broad Street for the annual Downtown Trick or Treat event, sponsored by local merchants.

As you can imagine, these kids will be sugared up and hyper and will need responsible Exchangites at crossings to insure their safety.  We need 24 volunteers.  The event is scheduled from 1 - 3 PM Saturday afternoon.  The meeting place will be announced at our meeting on Friday.  Please let  J P if you can participate by responding to the separate email you received from him.

Happy Halloween to everyone!!!

Don't forget to set your clocks back 1 hour on Saturday night after you have finished with all your Halloween activities.  We return to Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, Nov. 1
Veterans Day Observance

On November 11th,  all Exchangites are invited to participate in a flag raising ceremony at 8 o'clock  at the Rome CIity Auditorium flagpole. Representatives from the VFW, American Legion Posts, disabled vets, and  other military organizations are also  invited. It is recommended that all participants be there no later than 7:45 a.m.

We would also like to encourage any of our veterans to share their service experiences from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan with our club at our Veterans Program meeting on Nov. 13th when we will be honoring all of our veterans for their service to our country.  If any of you are interested please contact me at kingglfnt@yahoo.com and he will be in contact with you.

National Day of Service....
National Day of Service
This past Saturday Rome Exchange Club volunteers joined with Chapter 525 of the  Military Order of the Purple Heart  in cleaning up the Old East View Cemetery.

Approximately 18 Exchangites were on hand during the cleanup hours.  As mentioned at our meeting,  the Purple Heart organization will continue to work on this project in the coming weeks and months.  If you want to help out,  contact Exchangite Bill King  (email: kingglfnt@yahoo.com ) to get the schedule of future work days.  Chapter  525 of the Military  Order of the Purple Heart is also accepting donations to help cover their cost of this restoration and cleanup effort.

Last weeks meeting......

Exchangite Paul Smith
recollected on  his election to and service in the Georgia Legislature, beginning in 1984.  Paul served 22 years in the state legislature.  Paul gave an insiders view of how the state government process works.  Paul claims neither to be a Democrat or Republican though he had to choose a party in order to run in the Primary elections.  Paul's focus was on transportation and also making sure our local community was well served while he was in office.

Also, at our last meeting, members of Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 525 were on hand to award pins to Exchangites Bill King and Giles Chapman for their service and support to that organization.  Mostly recently for arranging the cleanup of the Old East View Cemetery to be  our Exchange Day of Service project.  The Military Order of the Purple Heart had taken on this project in order to locate the graves and to recognize at least 38 veterans buried there.  The cemetery encompasses almost 17 acres and is, in many places, totally covered over in brush and overgrowth.

Exchange Fellowship
This week please remember these Exchangites in your thoughts and prayers:

Exchangite Terry Clift's wife,  Nancy, fell and busted her knee really bad.  She had surgery and is  now resting at home and undergoing rehab.

If you have fellowship information, please let us know.  The email addresses are:
Gail Johnson: gailj1@bellsouth.net
If you have emailed one of the above and your fellowship need has not been announced within a few hours, please email one of the other contacts.

What some of the families who work with the Exchange Club Family Resource Center have to say about our services:
  • "I loved the talking I had with her [Parent Aide]"
  •  "I was so thankful I received the help I did.  I learned a lot."
  • "She taught me how to improve my anger."
  • "She was the first person who ever believed in me."

Meal Policy Of The Exchange Club Of Rome
Members are encouraged to bring prospective member guests to all regular meetings.  The club is most happy to pay for the meals of prospects the first three times they visit, more then that you are required to pay for your guest's meal unless they have submitted an application for membership, in which case the meals will remain at no charge  If you bring a non-prospect guest, someone to just join you for lunch, or if you take out a lunch for anyone that is not a member, you are required to pay for your guest's or takeout meal.  The cost of the meal is $10 per meal and must be paid to the Treasurer or other officer at the time of the meeting.  Money can also be placed in the Dues Box in the lobby.
