Todd Brooks
Athletic Director
Berry College
 Berry College welcomed back Todd Brooks as Athletic Director in the summer of 2015.
Brooks was Berry's Athletic Director from 2002 to 2013, overseeing 15 head coaches. He left to serve as Athletic Director at Christopher Newport University in 2013.
"Todd Brooks' return to Berry is our good fortune," said Debbie Heida, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs. "Todd helped build our current athletic program and his experience at Christopher Newport enhances the work he will do in leading our program to greater heights. I am pleased to welcome Todd back to Berry and to Rome."
Brooks, who started in July, has overseen the transition at Berry from NAIA membership to Division III status. During his tenure, he served on the steering committee which assisted in the design of the $32.5 million Cage Athletic and Recreation Center completed in 2008. He helped navigate the planning of Valhalla, the track and football stadium, and the planned conversion of Richards Gym into a training facility. Renovated practice fields at Ford and a new indoor batting facility have rounded out Berry's athletic facilities.
Under Brooks' leadership, Berry athletics doubled from 10 to 21 sports. Berry athletes have won numerous titles, including the Southern Athletic Association conference wins by women's volleyball and men's soccer. Other program successes include an Equestrian IHSA National Championship and Berry's baseball team appearance at the Avista-NAIA World Series.
His accomplishments at Berry also include earning the 2011 Berry College's Staff Martindale Award of Distinction and the 2008-09 and 2004-05 Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year.
A native of Anderson, Indiana, Brooks is a 1987 graduate of Milligan College in Milligan, Tennessee. He earned his Master of Arts in Education in 1990 from Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee.

Congratulations to Exchangite Steve Cox
Exchangite Steve Cox, Assistant District Attorney for the Rome Judicial Circuit, was announced "Assistant District Attorney of the Year for 2015" on July 19, 2015 during the 2015 Summer Conference sponsored by the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia.
Rome District Attorney Leigh Patterson nominated Cox for the award and praised his dedication. "Steve always goes the extra mile to ensure that the victim's interests are brought to the attention to the court and the jury. He is sensitive to the needs of victims and displays the utmost professionalism in the courtroom."

Exchange Fellowship
This week it seems like we have a lot people we need to pray for:
- Please remember Exchangite Vivian Richmeier parents, David & Dianne Maddox. Her Dad has tumors in liver, lungs, and pancreas. Her Mom has a broken foot and a slight bit of dementia. They are in Calhoun.
- Exchangite Wanda Whitten, a.k.a. our own pageant queen Miss Understood and Miss Redmond, is recoverying from surgery and we need to keep Wanda in our thoughts and prayers for a fast and complete recovery.
- Please remember Exchangite Jimmy Dupuy. His wife, Katherine died recently. It was good to see Jimmy, accompanied by his two daughters, at our meeting last week.
- Exchangite Bill Irmscher continues to improve and now is beginning rehab and therapy for his hand after his very serious encounter with a table saw.
- Exchangite Dan Caesar's 9 year old great nephew, Micah Winkle is showing improvement and has undergone some surgery to remove the main tumor at St. Jude's for bone cancer. He has been at St. Jude's since January but may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and may be able to go home in November. Please keep this family in your prayers.
- Mary Louise Dixon, wife of Exchangite Richard Dixon, Exchangite Ray Dempsey, and Terri Scott wife of Exchangite Dan Scott, all undergoing treatment for cancer.

Dr Jackie McDowell (on left) , Dean of the Charter School of Education at Berry College along with Odell Battles, South Rome Redevelopment Corporation, Chair, Education Committee presented an outstanding program about the South Rome Early Learning Center which is housed in the brand new Anna K Davie school opening this fall. This is a revolutionary new concept of early childhood education being developed by a partnership of Berry College, Rome City Schools, and the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation that is being watched by systems around the country.

After all these years.....
The remains of 1st Lt. Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman, Jr. have been found 71 years after his death in WW II and are being returned to the U.S. for burial. Why is this news for Exchange Club of Rome? First, Sandy Bonnyman is Exchangite Al Bonnyman's uncle. Secondly, he was also Martha Berry's nephew. Because of this, Exchangite Howie Lowden is also related to Sandy through marriage. A life-size portrait of Sandy Bonnyman is displayed in Oak Hill Museum.
Sandy Bonnyman is one of four Marines that received the Medal of Honor for the battle of Tarawa in November, 1943. In that three-day battle, over 1,000 Marines and sailors perished and the Japanese garrison was annihilated. During the landing, the Marines in the landing force were on landing craft that hit a coral reef hundreds of yards off shore. They had to climb out of the boats, cross over the reef, and wade ashore in chest deep water, all while under fire. There was a concrete blockhouse that the U.S. battleships were unable to neutralize that was pouring heavy, aimed fire on the troops and they were unable to advance. Sandy Bonnyman organized a small group, grabbed a satchel charge of demolitions, and ran forward and threw the explosive charge into the blockhouse. He returned to the U.S. lines, got more demolitions and ran forward to the blockhouse, got to its top, and threw the demolitions down the air vent, killing over 100 of the defenders. More of them were killed when coming out of the blockhouse, but one fatally shot Lt. Bonnyman. His remains were buried in an unmarked mass grave on Tarawa and they were recently recovered and identified. The remains are being returned to the continental U.S. and will be buried in Knoxville, TN on September 27th.
The story above provided by Exchangite Hal Gosnell. NPR aired an interview with Clay Bonnyman Evans, Sandy's grandson,on Wednesday morning. He joined the searchers and was there when the remains of his grandfather were found and identified. This is a very interesting interview.

Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower Race
It's time to lace up your running shoes, your walking shoes, or your volunteer shoes and mark your calendars for the 30th Annual Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower 5K Road Race and 2 Mile Health Walk. This year will mark the 10th year of Exchange Club involvement and benefiting our own Family Resource Center. The race will be held on Saturday, August 15th, at 8:00am. We need participants, sponsors, and volunteers. This race cannot happen without your help. Volunteer sheets will start appearing at meetings starting next week. Registration forms and sponsorship information are available by clicking on the appropriate links.
As always, the race cannot happen without many volunteers, and this year this is especially important, since I will be taking a less active role in the future. There are several key roles that can be filled by volunteers who will work closely with Exchangite Jason Sanker and me to ensure that every aspect of the race is covered. Some of these roles have been filled, but there are still some needs. We still need individuals to fill the following leadership positions:
- Volunteer Coordinator - Filled
- Refreshments Coordinator -Filled
- Registration Liaison - Ensures that registration deadlines are met on race day (no runners may register after 7:30am). Ensures that all entries are received by the Finish Line company for input, and then returned to Kathy Phillips for input into the race email database. Assists the Finish Line company in tracking down problem entries prior to race and during results compilation.
Volunteers are needed to stuff approximately 600 race packets on Thursday, August 13, beginning at 10:00am. If anyone can help they should contact Gail. This is a change from the past, and from what we previously announced.
Next year there will be other roles that can be filled by someone other than the race director, but if we can get volunteers in these for this year, it would be tremendous! Flags presented to Pepperell Schools
Recently the Exchange Club's Americanism Committee had been advised that the flags at Pepperell Middle and Pepperell High were in need of replacement. On Monday, July 27th, prior to teachers reporting and prior to the first day of school, each school was given a new flag to be flown at their respective schools to begin the new school year.

Yard Sale Items Needed
Our own Mr. Yard Sale, Scottie Edwards has put out a call for items to be placed in another Exchange Club Yard Sale to be held at the fairgrounds August 22nd.
What ever you have...we want it and you can either bring it to an Exchange meeting with you or we will pick it up if you call Scottie at 706-346-5998. Nothing is too small or too big because one man's trash is an others treasure.
All club proceeds will be used to help purchase car safety seats. |
News from the Family Resource Center...
Back to School Supplies....
Historically, the Exchange Club has sponsored a "Family Fun Day" to provide families working with our agency a day out as well as school supplies. Exchange members, FRC staff, and families enjoy the day, but time is a barrier this year.
Therefore, the FRC would like to change the way we distribute school supplies to families served by our agency....and we believe the change will mesh well with our Parent Aide program (we are actually pretty excited about the possibilities!).
There are two ways you can help:
1) Purchase gift cards (e.g. Wal-Mart, Staples, Christies, etc.): Our Parent Aides will be responsible for and manage the gift cards. They will meet parents at the store and assist them in picking out school supplies. The simple act of purchasing supplies as a family allows us to reinforce budgeting skills, address stress management and model behavior management in a public setting. It also provides a great family experience while enabling the parents to select items their child needs most. With your gift, we provide families with a very tangible experience that reinforces some of the skills we teach!
2) Purchase school supplies and donate directly to us for distribution to families. If you see some good sales and prefer to "stock up and donate", we are glad to distribute those items to our families. In addition to the "usual" supplies, we also welcome backpacks, lunchboxes, 1-2" binders (look for durable, clear view).
National Exchange donates $1000 Scholarship
Special thanks to our National Exchange Club for a $1000 scholarship to our child abuse prevention networks National Symposium. This will allow Parent Aide Shemika Roberts to attend some great training at no cost to the Center.

Message from our new President
Welcome to the 2015 - 2016 Exchange Club Year. We kicked off the year right with one of our Youth Projects: the Give-a-Kid-a-Flag-to-Wave Project. Exchangites handed out flags to kids on Broad Street as well as at the Fireworks show. I would like to thank all those who gave their time and worked hard for this event over the weekend of the 4th.
Our club members accomplished so much last year, and I know that we will have to work hard just to keep pace, but I am confident we will do more this year.
One theme that The National Exchange Club is promoting this year is "Exchange Strong ". Exchange Strong is about serving communities. It's about raising awareness of the sacrifices of American Troops and their loved ones. Exchange Strong is about spreading child abuse prevention awareness and education to protect the most vulnerable among us. The Exchange Club of Rome is already leading the Rome area on both of those fronts. The Exchange Club Family Resource Center is attacking child abuse every day and is the only certified Child Abuse Prevention Center in the state of Georgia. This year's Memorial Day Celebration Service, spearheaded by our own Americanism Committee, was a fitting tribute to the sacrifices our veterans and their families have made over the years.
The coming year presents many opportunities for each member of the Exchange Club of Rome to be "Of Service" in his or her own way. One of my goals for our club is to engage more members in more activities which will translate into better service to our community. Another goal that I have is to increase our recognition and our celebration of the Youth of the Rome and Floyd County area. The future of our county, state, and nation lies with our young citizens and their accomplishments are numerous. We have plans for at least one and possibly two 'Freedom Shrines' to be installed at local schools, more information will be forthcoming at a later date.
We can all contribute to the cause of a better community in different ways, if you have an idea for a project or a cause that needs a project, I want to know about it. My door is always open and I look forward to working with each and every one of you to make the Exchange Club of Rome the best club in the nation.

Answer The Letter...Join The Campaign
 Family Resource Center Vice-President Jim Talley reminded all Exchangites at the last meeting that Annual Campaign letters had been sent to all members asking them to make a financial contribution to our Exchange Club Family Resource Center, the only fully accredited Exchange Child Abuse Prevention Center in Georgia.
Talley thanked all those who have already responded and urged those who have not yet sent in their pledge cards or a donation to please do so as quickly as possible. He also reported referrals to the FRC are running ahead of last year and there are more cases than we can handle with the current staff we have.
Exchangite Charles Stevens has accepted the role of Chairman of the Exchange Annual Campaign. Charles will be selecting fellow Exchangites to serve as Campaign Leaders who will then contact individual members that have not pledged or donated.
