"Free Speech" is More Than Just Words -- Courage is Required Too

Celebrating "Free Speech" is tough.  It takes strength of character and patience. We at Access Sacramento encourage you to remember how important this constitutional freedom is in helping build and establish democracy. Remember, the ability to debate what is right; what is moral; what our future can be, is unique to our country and the type of  freedom that is punished in much of the world.

Here in America though, it's generally not until our "Free Speech" is taken away that we remember just how fundamental our basic rights have become. It's not necessary to agree with what's being said, but we all can agree that having "free and open debate on issues of public importance" is one of the things that makes America great.

Don't fear speech. Fear what happens when speech is turned off. Whether it's from the oppression by the majority, or by pressure from threats by a special interest group, a silenced voice only leads to missed opportunities. Conversation leads to better decisions and serves the greater good.

Access Sacramento Executive Director
Gary Martin

By speaking and by listening, society grows and improves. Greater buy-in for decisions is assured. For an opposition voice, the act of speaking out and of being heard, leads to a better group decisions because more options lead to improved consensus and stronger conviction.  When there are two sides, generally only one can win. Sometimes though, compromise means both sides "win," but that's only in a world where both sides are allowed to talk, where "Free Speech" is cherished and celebrated.

Take a moment this week to remember the value of "Free Speech."  We at Access Sacramento make it our mission to do so every day, so that we can "Make A Difference, One Voice at a Time."

From the desk of Gary Martin, Access Sacramento Executive Director.
