Community Radio KUBU 96.5 FM
Boosts Internet Stream Quality

Access Sacramento is pleased to announce an improvement in the overall Internet streaming quality for "The Voice of Sacramento" KUBU-LP 96.5 FM.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Internet encoder from KUBU that feeds our Internet service was reset to a full CD quality rate of 128kb, doubling the 64kb rate we have been streaming for nearly a decade.

Access Sacramento Radio Coordinator Shane Carpenter
Access Sacramento radio coordinator Shane Carpenter determined the higher rate would  align the Internet feed with  KUBU's over-the-air and on-cable broadcast quality.  Additionally, he determined the higher quality might help with the last week's inconsistent stream reliability from the radio distributor Live365.  His diligence in testing the source of the issue included tracking every internet server-link that carries the KUBU signal along its internet path to the LIVE365 rebroadcast service.

Executive Director Gary Martin indicates the Internet stream is more popular than ever now with mobile radio apps like TuneIn for iPhone and Live365 itself for Android phones making the internet stream more accessible. Loyal listeners and community producers alike have been able to hear KUBU where ever they are.

KUBU Launch with Access Sacramento Executive Director Gary Martin (left) and Radio Coordinator Shane Carpenter.
KUBU-LP 96.5 FM signed on as an over-the-air low-power FM radio broadcaster in November, 2014 after nearly 30 years as a cable-audio radio station.  Community producers can still be heard as the background audio to Access Sacramento community message bulletin board service, on the Secondary-Audio-Program (SAP) for cable 17 & 18, and on the internet from AccessSacramento.org.

For more information about Access Sacramento's KUBU 96.5 FM, or to sign up for a class to have your own radio show, call 916-456-8600 ext. 0.

AccessLocal.TV Welcomes New Group Of Youth Reporters

AccessLocal.TV, the community media website operated by Access Sacramento, has hired five new youth reporters, referred to as Neighborhood News Correspondents, to produce video, audio, and written content for Access Sacramento and the web.
Neighborhood News Correspondents (From Left) David Alcala, Victoria Dries, Maipaluka Moua, Ivan Caballero, Kiara Crenshaw and Fabiana Dávila Viera.

In a related development, David Alcala, who has participated in this program since March, 2015, has been promoted to a Type II Correspondent, with additional responsibilities and mentoring opportunities.

"I'm very excited to see what these young minds have to offer," said Isaac Gonzalez, Youth Media Coordinator for AccessLocal.TV. "Already, I'm convinced that the talent and curiosity level of this batch of youth reporters has the potential to make this one of the best groups I've worked with during the past four years."

The new correspondents, who started producing content for the site last week, are Ivan Caballero, 16, Kiara Crenshaw, 17, Maipaluku Moua, 19, Fabiana Dávila Viera, 19, and Victoria Dries, 20. Each has been provided with video equipment and web content production training and will begin reporting on community-related issues in Sacramento County in the coming days.

AccessLocal.TV is primarily funded by a generous grant from the California Endowment, a health foundation that advocates for health and health equity, and raises awareness of how and where health can happen.

The majority of content produced on AccessLocal.TV surrounds the work and issues related to the "Building Healthy Communities" initiative, a 10-year, $1-billion program which strives for improvements in community health through creating stronger neighborhoods, safer schools, and working to provide all residents of California with health coverage.

Since 2010, AccessLocal.TV has published more than 2,000 original articles, videos, and podcasts to raise awareness of important issues in our community.
