AccessLocal.TV Welcomes New Group Of Youth Reporters

AccessLocal.TV, the community media website operated by Access Sacramento, has hired five new youth reporters, referred to as Neighborhood News Correspondents, to produce video, audio, and written content for Access Sacramento and the web.
Neighborhood News Correspondents (From Left) David Alcala, Victoria Dries, Maipaluka Moua, Ivan Caballero, Kiara Crenshaw and Fabiana Dávila Viera.

In a related development, David Alcala, who has participated in this program since March, 2015, has been promoted to a Type II Correspondent, with additional responsibilities and mentoring opportunities.

"I'm very excited to see what these young minds have to offer," said Isaac Gonzalez, Youth Media Coordinator for AccessLocal.TV. "Already, I'm convinced that the talent and curiosity level of this batch of youth reporters has the potential to make this one of the best groups I've worked with during the past four years."

The new correspondents, who started producing content for the site last week, are Ivan Caballero, 16, Kiara Crenshaw, 17, Maipaluku Moua, 19, Fabiana Dávila Viera, 19, and Victoria Dries, 20. Each has been provided with video equipment and web content production training and will begin reporting on community-related issues in Sacramento County in the coming days.

AccessLocal.TV is primarily funded by a generous grant from the California Endowment, a health foundation that advocates for health and health equity, and raises awareness of how and where health can happen.

The majority of content produced on AccessLocal.TV surrounds the work and issues related to the "Building Healthy Communities" initiative, a 10-year, $1-billion program which strives for improvements in community health through creating stronger neighborhoods, safer schools, and working to provide all residents of California with health coverage.

Since 2010, AccessLocal.TV has published more than 2,000 original articles, videos, and podcasts to raise awareness of important issues in our community.

Youth Certification Training Completed with Access Sacramento Remote Truck

Eight young people from the Youth Broadcast and Media Association (YBAMA) completed basic certification training Saturday using the Access Sacramento remote broadcast truck.  Several additional volunteer experiences will finalize the certification.
Access Sacramento Remote Truck Training (Top row, from left) Myles Hailey from Cosumnes Oaks HS, Access Sacramento Truck Engineer Richard Langley (Bottom Row, from left) Dom  Herrera from Grant HS, Slade Carpenter from Bear River HS, Maury Montalvo from Grant HS, and Cameron Clark from Natomas HS.

After five training days on using the cameras, microphones and other production equipment, the crew spent the morning setting up for their test project.

Maury Montalvo being recorded in the monitor while Lucas Immenshuh operates the video switcher.
Each had a specified job, but would temporarily step out of their role to become the subject of an interview about their background and experience with broadcasting.

Access Sacramento Engineer-in-Charge Richard Langley, along with engineer Danny Mendosa, provided the guidance and training during the six sessions.

The varied and complex tasks in operating a full TV studio on wheels can be daunting, but these students really stepped up to the task.

Bear River graduate and Chapman University sophomore Justin Rypma (left) awaits his opportunity to be interviewed as Slade Carpenter operates camera.
After some minor editing to attach a taped "Open" for the show, and with the addition of closing credits, the show should be ready for broadcast on Access Sacramento in August.

Access Sacramento is grateful for the assistance of YBAMA founder Dr. Bill Bronston for his leadership and marshalling of the young trainees.

Kamrouz Nadimi Retires
After 21 Years of Service as Access Sacramento Engineer

Our highly respected, knowledgeable, and patient broadcast engineer, Kamrouz Nadimi, has retired from Access Sacramento after 21 years of dedicated service. Highly skilled in television and electronic equipment repair and maintenance, Mr. Nadimi has kept the organization operational for the past two decades. His skill and ongoing training helped our non-profit move from the early days of ½ inch videotape, transitioning to ¾ U-Matic, and now into the digital age and HD high definition video.

Access Sacramento staff last week in the Production Office (from left) Bhim Kumar-Reyes, T.D. Trice, Elizabeth Harrison, Shane Carpenter, Kamrouz Nadimi, Gary Martin and Carlos Hernandez

Quietly working behind the scenes, Kamrouz not only managed all routine maintenance and installation, he also worked closely with other staff to develop new configurations including the "Studio-in-a-Box" and "Studio-in-a-Suitcase" designs of former Director of Operations and Training Dev Singh. Also noteworthy was the conversion of a used recreational vehicle into a mobile television studio seen around the community for the past 10 years on "Game-of-the-Week" and "Hometown TV" productions.

Kamrouz Nadimi
In addition to his part-time duties each week at Access Sacramento, Mr. Nadimi has been a full time television engineer for KCRA NewsChannel 3. A dedicated family man, he used the extra money to put his children through school. His own schooling included ongoing special training in repair and engineering design from international SONY Electronics Labs. His high level of expertise and problem solving skills have kept the technology humming even during times when funds were scarce and maintenance challenges became more difficult.

As an immigrant from the Middle East, Mr. Nadimi was extremely supportive of the mission of Access Sacramento - to empower voices neglected or oppressed by the privileged and powerful. He is a kind and gentle soul and will be missed for both his technical expertise and for his warm personality.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, the staff, and all of his friends, Access Sacramento wishes Kamrouz and his family the very best. We thank him for his years of dedicated service marked by his many kindnesses to all he encountered.

Tribute written by Ron Cooper, retired Access Sacramento Executive Director.
